The Black Glasses Squad (, Black Glasses Squad?), as they are popularly known, are the teeming hordes of nameless bodyguards cum private military contractors cum manservants cum general dogsbodies who work for Shūtarō Mendō. They're renowned for their obedience and loyalty, willingly obeying even the most ridiculous commands from their master, but they are not the most competent of underlings, which stands as a marked contrast to the skill and professionalism of their kuroko counterparts who serve Ryōko Mendō. Whilst they often adopt other costumes when performing specific tasks, such as traditional Japanese farmer's clothes whilst cutting through grass to search for a missing Lum, their typical uniform is a professional two-piece suit paired with plain black sunglasses, a parody of the Hollywood stereotype of a bodyguard or American governmental agent.
Trivia[]
- They're never formally named the Black Glasses Squad in canon, although in the AnimEigo subtitles, they are refered to as the "Men in Black Sunglasses" at least once, in the episode where Asuka Mizunokōji visits the Mendō estate. This is a parody on the famous "Men in Black" moniker, itself associated with cryptids, secret government agents, and conspiracy theories.
- In the second English translation of Chapter 178 by Viz Media, Ataru refers to them as "The Sunglasses Squad".
