Lightning Doesn't Strike Twice
Those who have the opportunity to compare the two often regard Ranma 1/2 as a kind of "Urusei Yatsura 2.0". I consider this a fair appraisal, myself. But when it comes to comparing the romances at the heart of the two stories - Ranma/Akane vs. Ataru/Lum - I can't help but find that Ranma and Akane's relationship doesn't "work" for me as Ataru and Lum's did. Likewise, I feel that despite some underlying similarities, the ending of Ranma 1/2 is nowhere near as well-written as the ending of Urusei Yatsura. In this essay, I will attempt to explain why I feel that way about the endings - I've already observed why I like Ataru/Lum, and by extension dislike Ranma/Akane.
The finale of Urusei Yatsura is told through a saga that I informally dub "The…
Sparks of Love and Hatred
One of the things almost any fan of Urusei Yatsura has to contemplate at some point is why they support Ataru and Lum as a couple. On paper, the two are technically kind of awful people, and their relationship sounds very toxic; Ataru can be cruelly callous and is chronically faithless, whilst Lum is violent and possessive, to say nothing of how she forced her way into Ataru's life and demanded he love her back even though Ataru cleared it up with her that his proposal was an accident and he was happily in a relationship with Shinobu. And yet, somehow, Urusei Yatsura takes these two flawed characters and this unnatural relationship start and turns them into something beautiful, into a couple we root for and we want to see truly get togethe…
Prototype vs. Testtype; UY's heritage in R/12
It's widely accepted that Rumiko Takahashi likes to recycle her material; ideas, designs, concepts, characters and other such elements can very clearly be tracked back to each other in at least some of her works. Look at Inuyasha and Mao; both involve a female high school student touched by magic who involuntarily travels through time to the past and begins adventuring with a supernatural male protagonist. But the first place it began is in Ranma 1/2, which could easily be considered "Urusei Yatsura 2.0". Here, I'm going to take note of the inspirations, homages or references I've noticed in Ranma 1/2 throwing back to Urusei Yatsura.
The obvious place to start is the basic setup of both series. Both Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2 are slapstic…
