The serial fulfiller Bluebird (連続幸福魔の青い鳥, Renzoku Koufuku Ma no Aoi Tori) is an alien convict whose dedication to grant people’s wishes only brings outrageous results.

Biography[]

Shortly after being apprehended by the space cops Tyltyl and Mytyl and held in their galactic facility, he managed to escape from his cage and made his way to Earth. He arrives at Tomobiki and resumes his commitment to bring happiness starting at Tomobiki High School. And the reason he is a criminal is revealed to be that his way of trying to bring happiness is by bestowing a feather of his to render anyone able to turn anything they touch into what they wish and not only he does so by butting in and without asking, but he tends to misunderstand, for example: the word “Taiyaki” as 鯛焼き (food) for タイヤ木  (タイヤ= tire & 木 = tree), and the word “Kane” as 金 (money) for 鐘 (bell). However, Lum resists his attempt to make her happy for she believes herself not pathetic enough to need a bird’s help to be happy and recognizes him from a wanted poster thus warns every students through announcement not to make a wish if they meet upon him, however many students wouldn’t listen and regretfully made their wishes to him. Mr. Fujinami and Ataru also met upon him but on the other hand got their wishes right although outrageous (Mr. Fujinami could turn any woman into a man, and Ataru could turn any man into a woman). He is eventually cornered by Lum on the school’s roof and Tyltyl and Mytyl arrive to arrest him again. Only by removing the feathers off of the students’ heads can revert everything back to normal.

Appearance[]

The Bluebird of Happiness, also known as "Blue Bird", appears as a large, cartoonish bird roughly the size of Lum with a somewhat bedraggled appearance, wearing the traditional yobai mask. In the anime, he is explicitly shown with dark blue feathers.

Personality[]

The Bluebird is obsessed with making people happy by using his powers to grant their wishes. Whilst this would be a noble attitude, it is undermined by his two great flaws. Firstly, he is extremely impulsive, leaping to grant any wish he hears people making in his earshot without clarifying or confirming what they said, then moves on as soon as he has granted the wish. Secondly, he is immensely arrogant, refusing to believe that he might ever have gotten anything wrong.

Abilities[]

The Bluebird's primary power is his "Happiness Beam". Anyone touched by this beam develops a blue feather on their head; until this feather is destroyed, they gain the power to warp anything they touch into something else that will, supposedly, make them happy. He is also capable of flight.

Trivia[]

  • His seiyu also voiced Dracula and Sōban.
  • He is based on the symbol of a Bluebird as the harbinger of happiness found in many cultures.
  • His story is arguably a hard story to translate into English, as the core gag of the Bluebird mistakenly granting the wrong wishes is dependent on the myriad homophones in the Japanese language.
