Plot[]

a

Ataru's Mother arrives at Tomobiki High School, upset that Ataru's Father didn't agree to come to the Parenting Event instead. To her dismay, Shinobu's Mother recognizes Ataru's Mother, and as the two walk together to their children's classroom, an ox-driven cart stops by them. An altercation between a janitor and a butler occurs that's interrupted when a spaceship lands on top of the cart. The lady that rode the cart was ok... disheveled looking now, but ok.

From the spaceship, a lady resembling Lum exits it and, speaking in a different language, talks to Ataru's Mother. Before the butler could convey what his lady wanted to the lady resembling Lum, Lum hugs the lady revealing her to be her mother. Mendō then arrives at the scene and greets his mother, who asks him to convey what she wanted to say to Lum's Mother, much to the butler's chagrin.

Mendō then has Lum act as a translator for him as he conveys his mother's disdain for what her mother had done to her oxcart. However, Lum mistranslates the conveyed message to a more positive one causing her mother to hug Mendō. Furious by Lum's Mother's actions, Mendō's Mother throws challenges Lum's Mother to a duel, which she accepts, but declines what she interpreted before as Mendō's marriage proposal to her.

Their duel never takes place because the school day has ended, and everyone goes home.

b

Lum visits Ataru, who was sleeping in his room, and forces him to wake up. Later downstairs, Lum joins Ataru to enjoy breakfast with his parents. Later again, they walk to school, and a yellow maple leaf falls on top of Lum's head, which intrigues her. Satoshi explains to Lum about the leaf and its distinct color. She was especially interested in seeing the leaves change color, but gets angry when Ataru hits on another girl.

At school, Ataru displays his amazing yo-yo skills to some of his peers, as Lum sews a doll for Ataru together. Things escalate when Mendō mentions that Lum would one day leave Ataru, which would suit him just fine. Stopping her sewing, Lum mentions her concern for Ataru, noting how he does the most foolish things when she's not around. However, Ataru proudly claims that he's too afraid of Lum to do anything foolish and then tries to impress Shinobu with his yo-yo skills, but to no avail.

That afternoon, in Ataru's room, Lum finishes the doll she had been working on all day. Unable to show Ataru what it was because of an argument between them, Lum leaves the doll she made for him on his desk and leaves by flying out through the window.

The following day, Ataru is awoken by his Mother and goes to school without Lum. It's there that Ataru learns that Lum wasn't there and that he's finally free to hit on all of the ladies of his choice. However, when he returns home that afternoon, Ataru finds the doll that Lum made for him, and starting from the next day, keeps it in his pocket.

Gazing outside the window from his classroom, Hokuto approaches Ataru about Lum's whereabouts, but notices and takes the doll Lum made from him and snatches it out of Ataru's pocket. Mendō then cuts into the scene and comments that Lum had finally dumped Ataru, with whom, he disdainfully disagreed and figured Mendō had kidnapped her. Ataru demanded that Mendō return Lum; however, Mendō denies ever having her. This leads to the revelation that Lum has gone missing prompting Mendō to summon the Mendō police force to search for her. As this goes on, Ataru revisits places where Lum and him had poignant experiences, but she's found at none of them, leaving Ataru despondent that she's gone for good.

Meanwhile, on the Oni Dreadnought, Lum argues with her parents about filling out her renewal passport to Earth. Lum's Father then inadvertently activates a radio that reveals the doll Lum gave Ataru was bugged with a microphone so that she could eavesdrop on him while she was gone. From the radio, Ataru could be heard crying in his bed with the doll beside him.

The next day, Ataru walks to school in a morose mood until Lum lands nearby him and greets him. They walk to school together as Lum wraps herself around Ataru's arm and notices him with the doll she made for him in his pocket.

Differences from the Manga[]

  • The school groundskeeper does not interact with Lum's mother in the a-story like he did in the manga.
  • Kōsuke Shirai was present in the a-story to comment on the Mendo-Oni war while in the manga a regular student made the comment.
  • When Mendo's mother throws her glove to propose a duel, it hits Lum's mother's chest (and her face in the 1981 anime), but in the manga she caught it with her hand before it made any contact.
  • Lum's mother is more embarrassed about the misunderstood proposal than in the manga and rejects it due to their families statuses, whereas in the manga where she nonchalantly rejects it due to both already being married and both being women.
  • Hanawa is replaced by Onsen-Mark.
  • The a-story ends with Ataru's mother waking Ataru up in class and him wondering what happened to his screen time, but in the manga it ends with him and his mother walking away together and Ataru being regretful that he didn't have a chance to annoy anyone.
