The Tomo-1 Queen Contest (決戦!!友1クイーンコンテスト, Kessen!! Tomo-1 Kuīn Kontesuto) is the twenty-third episode of the 2022 adaptation of Urusei Yatsura.
Summary[]
The day of the Tomo-1 Queen contest has arrived, and the five contestants must compete in a series of contests to win the 150k prize.
Plot[]
Within the Tomobiki High School Gymnasium, Ataru, dressed in a referee outfit, announces to the audience the start of the Tomo-1 Queen contest on a wrestling ring canvas with the contestants standing behind him. Ataru further explained the setting's purpose to the contestants and the contest's prize for winning was something equivalent to 150k.
The prize announcement had each of the contestants reveal their own motives for winning the contest. Lum to impress Ataru, Ran to crush Lum, Sakura who hoped the prize money would pay for her wedding, and Ryūnosuke to prove herself to a real man.
For their first challenge, Ataru announces the ladies must stick their hands into a mystery box and figure out what's inside. Reluctantly, they all do, and Lum guesses it's Ten; however, Ataru clarifies that she must guess what Ten is holding. Ryūnosuke managed to figure out it was a watermelon, scoring her ten points.
Right after Ataru announces the sponsors for the last round, he goes on to explain the next round, which is grabbing one of three lollipops with a stool, a wooden crate, and a metal pipe. Shinobu and Sakura both beat Ataru up for the silliness of the contest, while Ryūnosuke wins the next round.
With that, Ataru announces the previous round's sponsor, and it quickly progresses into the next round, an eating contest where Sakura wins despite holding back. For the next round, Ataru announces that the contestants need to change into costumes for the main event, a fighting contest.
Once all of the contestants were introduced, Ran, the "weakest" of them all, immediately sucked the life out of Ryūnosuke, Shinobu, and Sakura. Lum points this out, and Ataru then announces that the last match is a tag-team match between the contestants and the Wild Beasts, who were all wild beasts. With Ryūnosuke, Shinobu, and Sakura all feeling flaccid after Ran drained them of their energies, the hopes of winning were in peril.
In the first round, Lum faces off against a Tiger, and shocks it into submission, who then tags out with the Anaconda. Sakura then tags in to face off against the Anaconda, which coils around her earning her some points with the judges, because of her position. As Sakura tries to tag out with Shinobu, but the Lion stops her, which Ataru calls him out on, but is then knocked out by the Gorilla. The Gorilla then tries to kiss Sakura, but is stopped by Shinobu, who tries to shoulder through him, but fails as its weight overpowers her.
Unable to witness the ladies in distress any further, Mendō dressed in a masked wrestler outfit enters the ring. However, he's instantly KOed by the Gorilla, who tries to take advantage of Sakura. Assisting Sakura, Lum uses her Electro Cross Chop move against the Gorilla, shocking it off of the Anaconda-coiled Sakura.
Meanwhile, Ryūnosuke laments over her first kiss outside the ring, but her Father pep talks her and then throws Ryūnosuke back into the ring. From there, Ryūnosuke tries to dropkick the Tiger, but it tosses her aside and tries to pin her down. Coming to Ryūnosuke's rescue, Lum shocks the tiger into submission.
Fearing for her life, Ran tries to flee, but is knocked back into the ring by the Lion and put in a compromised position. Begging Lum for help, she denies Ran's request and suggests that she drain the animal's power instead. Completely against that idea, Ran breaks free from Lion's hold and returns the power she stole to the ladies. With their power returned, they all KO the animals.
After the judges deliberate with each other, it's decided that it's a team victory. To that decision, the Principal explains why that was decided upon. Although upset that there wasn't a true winner, Ataru points out to the party balls hung on top of the ceiling that each contained a 30k prize. Surprisingly, all they contained were taiyaki waffles, and Ataru ran off as Lum chased after him.
Outside, Ataru counts the money he received for refereeing the contest by a tree as Lum grabs his money so she can catch his attention. Ataru then tries to snatch the money back from her, but trips over a tree root and nearly falls on top of her. Lum then asks if she was able to become the queen of Ataru's heart, but before he can answer, Ataru is chased away by Sakura and Shinobu.
