To Kill with Love (愛で殺したい, Ai de Koroshitai) and Studying Mayhem (自習騒動, Jishū Sōdō) are the two segments of the ninth episode of the 2022 adaptation of Urusei Yatsura.

Cherry receives an ominous fortune and tries to warn Ataru about it, but he's too preoccupied with cleaning his room for Shinobu and being bugged by Lum. Elsewhere, Shinobu is accosted by Lum's ex-fiance, who demands to see and propose to Lum.

Rei crashes into Ataru and Lum's classroom during their free study period to propose to Lum. However, Ran takes this opportunity to try and bond with Rei.
Plot[]

Sitting in his lot by a boiling pot, Cherry notes how ominous the sky appears and hopes nothing bad occurs. His boiling stew though forewarns a prophecy of doom as a big creature flashes by right above him while letting loose a loud growl.
Meanwhile, Ataru is pestered by Lum to do something fun together, as he tries to clean up his room, because Shinobu was coming over. Soon, Cherry enters Ataru's room by his bedroom window to warn him of a dangerous beast that's out to get him. On the other hand, Ataru flusteredly refuses to listen and continues cleaning his room, despite Cherry's warning for him to flee.
Walking down the street to Ataru's house, the beast Cherry warned Ataru about, appears before Shinobu and grabs her arm, while transforming into a humanesque form, and cries out for Lum. Back at the house, Ataru waits by his window sill for Shinobu ignoring Cherry's warning and Lum's coaxing him to join her in his bed. Immediately, Shinobu appears riding atop the beast's head, continuing to cry out for Lum, and transforms into the Oni known as Rei.
It turns out that Rei is Lum's ex-fiance and still wants her; however, Lum doesn't reciprocate his feelings and prefers Ataru. Ataru's Mother enters the room to complain about the noise, but when she looks at the handsome Rei, she instantly becomes infatuated with him. She'd later return all dolled up to impress Rei with a bowl of sweet potatoes which he gobbles up and grosses out Lum.
Rei then makes several attempts to try and coax Lum into accepting his marriage proposals, but Lum rejects them all, still fancying Ataru. Enraged, Rei transformed into his beast form and chased Ataru and Lum to Tomobiki Park. There they crash a bunch of marriage proposals, and Rei dines and dashes at a bunch of food stalls there. The chase ends back at Ataru's home, where all of the women who Rei unintentionally proposed to seek Rei's hand in marriage. Furthermore, the food stall owners want compensation from Ataru concerning Rei's dine and dashing.

The students of Class 2-4 enjoy themselves during their free study time. Amid this, Mendō tries to schedule a pick-up with his radio transmitter; however, "Channel Rei" jams the frequency. In his beast form, Rei crashes into the classroom on cue. Mendō volunteers to protect Lum after learning Rei was Lum's ex-fiance, and she, nearly escapes with Ataru in tow, but Ran pulls her aside, and coerces Lum to hook her up with Rei.
Back in the classroom, Mendō chastises Rei as an ugly beast, so Rei transforms into his oni form, making the girls infatuated with him, and leaving Mendō despondent. Before Rei could leap into Lum's arms, Ran stepped in and offered the lunch she had made for him, and he enjoyed it. After he finishes it, Rei calls out to Lum, which annoys her that he still doesn't understand Ran's feelings for him. Despite that, Ran was overjoyed that Rei had savored the lunch she had made him. However, gets disheartened when Cherry appears, offering his Lunch to Rei, and eats as politely as he did Ran's lunch. So moments later returns with another lunch she made and Rei politely eats it.
Receiving a call from his headphones, Rei whispers to Cherry, who tells the class that Rei is returning home because he's hungry. Later that afternoon, it's revealed that Rei returned to Ataru's home, where his mother served him some food.

After the credits roll, Ataru's Mother demands that Ataru's Father seemingly finalize the divorce papers she had filled out. However, it was really a paper to attend Ataru's Parent-Teacher day. Up in space, on the Oni Dreadnought, Lum's Mother applies makeup on her face, preparing herself for Lum's Parent-Teacher day.

Trivia[]
- The couple from Chapters 7, 27 and 99 who appeared in Episode 7 return with their names revealed to be Menko and Tsuyo. They would appear again in Episode 12 (2022).
