Differences from the manga[]

The plot is essentially the same, with numerous anime-original scenes. In the manga:

  • Oyuki, Ataru's Father, Ten and Onsen-Mark do not appear.
  • The only memory Ran is shown reminiscing about from childhood is Lum visiting her when she was ill with a cold; the memory of the sunstroke and the subsequent visit from Oyuki are anime-original.
  • After remembering the childhood incident with Lum's robot when she was ill with a cold, Ran exclaims "Lum no dochikushō!" instead of the "Lum no doaho!" that is seen in the anime. The Japanese word "chikushou" 「畜生」 arguably carries a heavier connotation than "aho" 「阿呆」, with the "do" added for emphasis, making the insult stronger.
  • Lum refutes Ataru's belief that someone must be badmouthing her only once. Shortly after, the story jumps to a week later with a panel showing Kotatsu-neko brushing his teeth.
  • Ran does not call Benten or Oyuki to visit; Lum was her only option since the beginning.
  • Ran sends only one messenger doll to speak to Lum during school. Ataru is not present when Lum receives the message, and she goes to visit Ran right after; as a result, there are no messenger dolls sent to or exploding in the class.
  • Lum actually uses the vacuum cleaner correctly and manages to clean up her mess after the robot explodes. The story then proceeds directly to the scene where she is about to leave but decides to stay with Ran; the scene with the laundry machine exploding is anime-original.
  • Ran's UFO is not nearly as destroyed by Lum's mishaps.
