  • First Appearance of Benten.

Differences from the manga[]

a
  • Lum's battle outfit is slightly different between versions. Whilst the horned helmet, cape and armored miniskirt are consistent, the anime version replaces the armored mini-top of the manga for a set of individual metal cups over each of Lum's breasts, similarly to Benten's outfit.
  • Ten and Rei both partake in the match, when they are absent in the equivalent manga chapter.
  • The competition setup is more elaborate. Instead of the simple "fill the baskets atop pillars" of the manga, the anime has each basket on the ends of a see-saw built into a statue, causing the lighter basket to rise higher as the heavier basket sinks. Each ball is actually a bomb, which detonates if it comes into contact with a protrusion hanging above each basket. The winning team is thus determined by raising the opponent's basket so high that all its balls are set off.
  • The manga chapter ends with Ataru being tied to a stake and pelted with beans by both Oni and Gods to drive out ill-luck after being dubbed the most useless player in the game. This isn't shown happening in the anime.
b
  • The chapter begins with Ten's disappointment that what would have been his first Setsubun (at least on Lum's home planet) is canceled for budgetary reasons. The Setsubun instead now takes place on Earth.
    • Thus, Shinobu doesn't appear.
  • Benten's gang (who are daughters of the Seven Lucky Gods) are anime-original characters.
    • Ataru is eager to join another gang when he hears that Benten is there, and proposes the Earth-style Setsubun. He and Benten are alone, with no gang.
  • The chapter ends after Ten's attack causes Ataru to fall from the motorcycle and the fake Oni pound him. Benten is pleased at how much fun the violent customs on Earth are and goes off to tell her gang.
