Imo (イモちゃん, Imo-chan) is a greedy caterpillar that Ataru looked after.
Biography[]
It was found by a Tomobiki High School student and brought to the Biology Club, where they keep caterpillars in a terrarium to sell them once they become butterflies. Due to its ugliness and tendency to hog any served food at an incredible speed causing the other caterpillars to suffer of malnutrition, it was given the name Ataru as if it was his spitting image. Just as Ataru gets to know it, the club decides to get rid of it, believing it wouldn't become a beautiful butterfly anyway, so Ataru keeps it renaming it Imo, and it would quickly grow attached to Ataru as he expresses to Lum in Class 2-4 that he believes it would become a beautiful butterfly. It would then become the target of angry class 2-4 students as it eats all their lunches, but would be protected by Ataru with Lum's help. As the two run with Imo from Mendō and the students' wrath, they get to the nurse office where they get bandages to wrap it since it got bruised, and keep protecting it until sunset from where a swarm of luminous butterflies shows up approaching, and Imo suddenly emerges from the bandages as a beautiful naked, translucent butterfly-winged fairy, much to Ataru and Lum's amazement. While calling the two “Papa” and “Mama”, she reveals that she came to the human realm to become a full-fledged fairy by eating as much food as she could and it was thanks to Ataru's belief that she would become beautiful that she was able to do so, then departs back to the Fairy world, saying goodbye and thank you to her parents.
