114 | "New Year Party at the Mendo Mansion" (面倒邸新年怪, "Mendo Teishinnen-kai")
Shinobu and Lum, and by extension Ataru, are invited to a New Year's party at the Mendo estate. Unfortunately, they quickly come to regret their decision to attend, as it turns out that the Mendo family's idea of a New Year's party is to turn their sprawling estate into an obstacle course, full of pranks and booby traps that leave their visitors and even Shutaro himself far more frustrated than amused.
115 | "Tales of the Wandering Snowman" (旅の雪ダルマ情話, "Tabi no yuki daruma jiyou wa")
While out flying one winter's night, Lum and Ten encounter an alien snowman when it falls from the heavens and crushes Ten under its bulk. The vengeful young oni attempts to burn it with his fiery breath, but instead accidentally blasts Ataru, returning from a trip to a public bathhouse. When the angry Ataru smacks Ten away for attacking him, the snowman believes Ataru deliberately protected it. The next day, the snowman follows Ataru around all day, but Ataru initially refuses to believe it's doing so, despite protestations from Lum, Ten and eventually his whole classroom, even though Ten keeps burning him when it takes shelter behind Ataru. That night, finally convinced, Ataru complains that he'd rather be haunted by a cute girl, and the snowman tries to fulfill his wish by placing an illusion over itself. When Ataru acts his usual lecherous self, the illusion is broken and the snowman flees into space, whilst Ataru is left with a severe cold.
116 | "Stay Out of Our Tea Shop!!" (喫茶店の出入りを禁ず!!, "Kiisaten he no deiri o kinzu")
A beautiful young girl named Izumi and her father open their first coffee shop near Tomobiki High, and her beauty attracts hordes of young boys from the school, who cut class to hang out there and watch her. This enrages the teachers of Tomobiki High, who place a ban on students visiting coffee shops, but that only causes more students to cut class and head there out of spite. Which brings the teachers there in an effort to stop them. Soon, the fighting grows so severe that Izumi and her father are convinced that it will be their downfall. Eventually, Izumi's father attempts to frighten off the Tomobiki crowd by throwing live cockroaches at them, but in a cruel twist of fate, he hits the wrong people and is forced to close. Izumi and her father move on... but not before her father arranges a series of prank calls that he pins on Tomobiki High's teachers.
117 | "Locker Inspections" (所持品検査だ!, "Shojihin kensa da!")
As another school day begins at Tomobiki High, several of the teachers are digging a pit outside of the school. Even odder is when Lum arrives with a giant robot at her side. She insists it's just to carry her books, but the robot asserts it's a combat model. When she goes inside, the robot takes an interest in the teachers, and after hearing their brief explanation, ushers them inside whilst it continues digging. The purpose of the hole is ultimately revealed; Tomobiki High is holding a school-wide desk and locker inspection, confiscating all contraband personal items. Outside, they discover the robot has dug an enormous hole, far bigger than the original intended burial pit. Upon hearing of the situation, the robot changes sides, inciting the students to fight the teachers to take the property back, which they attempt. After they lose, Lum finally discovers in her manual that she did indeed buy the wrong model; what she bought is a "battlefield morale booster" - essentially a glorified cheerleader.
118 | "That Old Class of Mine" (部外者ちん入, "Bugaishachin niyuu")
Whilst Onsen Mark often has problems teaching Class 2-4, today is a particularly bad day. First Ten shows up, bored and looking for amusement. Then Cherry shows up and tries to have a cookout in the classroom. Then Benten shows up, and she throws Onsen Mark out on his face when he makes the mistake of trying to talk tough to her. When Oyuki pops out of a locker and buries him in snow, that's the last straw. He goes to the principal and demands that he hold a teacher's meeting to discuss how to keep the aliens and weirdoes off of the school, but he can't motivate the man to do so, especially since the principal enjoys hanging out with Cherry and Kotatsu Neko. He finally gets his wish... but it turns out that the room chosen is already being used by Lum's alien classmates for a reunion.
119 | "Valentine's Deception" (惑わじのバレンタイン!!, "Madowaji no BARENTAIN")
It's Valentine's Day, and every boy in class is stewing in resentment, because with Mendo in their class, not one of them has a chance with a girl. Only Ataru seems nonchalant, and when Mendo asks why, Ataru brags that's he's confident he'll get at least three chocolates, counting on Lum, Shinobu, and Ran. His pride is soon swiftly and soundly dashed; Shinobu is long over Ataru and would rather give her last chocolate to Ten, and Ran has no interest in giving Ataru chocolate when she can instead toss it down Rei's dump-truck gullet. Ultimately, he turns to Lum, but she proclaims that she has no chocolate for him. Ataru is crushed, with Mendo gloating over his failure. Sakura is no help, because she's so culturally ignorant she has no understanding of what Valentine's Day even means. Then, as the icing on the cake, Ataru sees Lum give a chocolate to Mendo. Crushed, Ataru heads home and cries himself to sleep, wondering if Lum really has lost interest in him. He's oblivious as Lum sets up her secret project: a giant love-heart made from a mosaic of homemade chocolates.
120 | "Risking Life During Classtime" (命かけます、授業中!!, "Inochi kakemasu, jyukyauchuu")
Ten arrives at Tomobiki High just before school starts to find the boys from Class 2-4 talking about how they'll have to start focusing in class before the vacation period, as the teachers are threatening them with make-up classes. When Ten's questions about what a "make-up class" is go ignored, he loses his temper and flames the boys, who retaliate by pounding him with snowballs until he flies away, vowing revenge. When class starts, Onsen Mark gives them all three minutes to talk, but vows that if they talk afterwards, it'll be make-up classes as a result. A curious Lum asks what those are, and though she thinks that sounds like fun, she agrees to stay silent for Ataru's sake. When class starts, Onsen Mark is initially thrilled, until he discovers they intend to refuse to answer any questions out of suspicion he'll use that as an excuse to hold a make-up class. Annoyed by this overly literal interpretation of his instructions, he declares he'll do exactly that from now. Unfortunately, then Ten arrives and starts attacking the students, who do their best to ignore or silently retaliate without giving Onsen Mark a reason to call them out as disruptive. By the time class ends and Ten gives up in impatience, the class is a total wreck.
121 | "Mendo Brother and Sister - Part 1" (面堂兄弟!!=その1=, "Mendo kyoudai - sono 1")
As Lum, Ataru and Ten head to Tomobiki High for another school day, they discover a very odd sight, even for Tomobiki: an ox-cart being marched through the streets, attended by men dressed as kuroko. When a handkerchief wafts out, Ataru immediately tries to get in good with what he expects to be a beautiful woman, only to be scared off by a skeletal ghost in a dress. At school, everybody's talking about it, but Shutaro Mendo has a suspicion about who it really was. His suspicions are confirmed soon afterwards; his sadistic trickster of a sister, Ryoko Mendo, has come to "play" with her big brother. Mendo refuses to play along, but Ataru immediately tries to put the moves on her. Seeing how angry this makes Mendo and Lum, Ryoko invites Ataru to visit her at her family estate to "play Romeo and Juliet". Despite the fierce opposition of Mendo and Lum, Ataru agrees, and Ryoko is left full of delighted anticipation.
122 | "Mendo Brother and Sister - Part 2" (面堂兄弟!!=その2=, "Mendo kyoudai - sono 2")
It's late evening at the Mendo estate, and both Mendo and his sister Ryoko are anticipating the arrival of Ataru, with drastically different attitudes. Neither is expecting him to just waltz into their dining room, having been escorted by a servant who recognizes him as "one of Mendo's friends" from their previous hanging around together. Ryoko gives Ataru a "horse" to escape on, whilst Mendo asks for permission to organize their private militia to stop Ataru. After the Mendo patriarch hears just how determined Ataru is when it comes to girls, he gives permission. Out in the gardens, Ataru's kuroko escort abandons him and he finds himself under a two-pronged assault; Shutaro's tanks on one side, and a well-meaning but now over-charged Lum on the other. He takes shelter in a kuroko-dug tunnel, and ultimately fights his way to Ryoko's tower, despite the efforts of Lum, Ten and Mendo's miltia to stop him. He finally reaches her, and succumbs to a combination of her blowing him up with grenades and Lum's electricity.
123 | "Hello, Sailor Suits!" (セーラー服よ、こんにちは!, "Seeraafuku yo, konnichi wa!")
Several of Ryoko's kuroko arrive at the Moroboshi household one evening to deliver a message from Ryoko; she wants to start seeing Ataru, starting from tomorrow. The next morning, on their way to school, Lum tries to talk Ataru out of seeing Ryoko, but some of Ryoko's kurokos kidnap him from under Lum's nose. He shows up later for class, but he's an utter wreck, completely exhausted. This repeats for a week, before finally Lum, Mendo, Ten and Cherry allow Ataru to be abducted so they can follow him. They are led to Ryoko's school, where some of her classmates bludgeon them unconscious. It turns out she has been using hypnosis to turn Ataru into her "dog" each day, and now she decides to turn her powers on her brother... except it turns out she got her hypnotic incense recipe wrong and it doesn't work: Ataru was just pretending to be hypnotized so he could cavort with the girls in a way they wouldn't tolerate from him if they knew he was himself. Dismayed at the realization that she was out-tricked, Ryoko gives up on this scheme.
124 | "A Present From Ten" (テンからの贈り物!!, "Ten kara no okurimono!")
Ataru watches jealously through a window as Ten is the guest of honor at a small party being held by Lum, Ran, Shinobu and Sakura. Ten brings out his newest toy; a Lovey Dovey Catch Ball, which will supposedly show the user the face of whoever they are destined to marry. The girls all look inside, but each sees the wrong person; Shinobu sees Tsubame, Ran sees Ataru, Lum sees Rei, and Sakura sees both Mendo and Ataru. The women soon devolve into bickering, with things only getting more heated when Ataru, Shutaro and Tsubame all show up inside, especially as Ataru and Mendo keep hitting on Sakura and Ran. Ten contacts the seller, and is informed he was mistakenly sent a Trouble Catch Ball, which shows the user's worst spousal pick, but it comes too late to stop the irate women from tearing the cafe apart in a free-for-all. |
