Chapter # Title
279 "Fox Takes a Bride"
(キツネの嫁取り, "Kitsune no yome tori")
Chapter 279
The young kitsune goes to a little old lady who lives near his forest, asking her for a story. She tells him a legend of a poor man who created a beautiful wedding gown for his bride by blowing a dandelion over her. Inspired by this, the kitsune picks some dandelions and heads to Tomobiki, hoping that when she sees his magical wedding gown, Shinobu will agree to marry him. He arrives as Tomobiki High is holding a costume contest, and is heartbroken to find Shinobu in a wedding dress and running along with Ryunosuke, who is wearing a wedding tuxedo, both courtesy of Ryunosuke's crazy father. Dismayed, he gives up on this plan and returns to the little old lady, hoping she might have a tale on how to win back a sweetheart.
280 "Planet Strongfood"
(強食惑星, "Kyoshoku wakusei")
Chapter 280
An alien exploratory vessel passes by Earth when one of its crewmembers loses a special cooking pot. In Tomobiki High School, Class 2-4 is feeling more rebellious than usual, as they are being made to hold a Saturday study session without lunch. A massive impact suddenly shakes the school, and Onsen Mark goes to investigate. The students quickly follow him, and find him at the bottom of a crater outside, standing over a bowl of hotpot. They beat him senseless, and then Lum reveals the bowl is made from alien materials. Before they can examine the hot pot, Cherry arrives and eats it, confirming it to be delicious. They lament their luck at missing out on a meal, but as they mention food, that food appears in the pot. They promptly start arguing over who gets to use the food first, causing it to overflow with massive quantities of food - actually teleported from the storage hold of the alien ship. Suddenly, the aliens appear and retrieve their pot and their provisions... but they accidentally take the students with them, trapping them in the hold and forcing them to eat for their lives.
281 "A Problematic Blue bird of Happiness"
(かってな幸福、青い鳥, "Katte na kofuku aoi tori")
Chapter 281
A ship of alien bounty hunters is passing by Earth when one of their prisoners, the "serial happiness perp" known as Blue Bird, escapes from their custody and flees to Earth, landing at Tomobiki High. He proceeds to fly around "granting wishes" to all the students, but bungling them every time. Lum tries to warn her schoolmates with Onsen Mark's help, but the students who have been tricked go on to trick their fellows into seeing him out of spite. Lum ultimately manages to apprehend the mad bird just as the bounty hunters arrive. They instruct her on how to remove the cursed wish-granting feathers he left on her classmates, which involves shooting them with a flamethrower.
282 "Mother's Heart, Child's Heart"
(母の心、子の心, "Haha no kokoro, ko no kokoro")
Chapter 282
Lum is thrilled to receive a videocall from her aunt, who informs her that she's taking a brief spell from work to visit her son Ten, and she flies off to tell Ten the good news. She finds him just as he is about to charbroil Ataru, and fortunately for Ten, as his mother arrives seconds behind her. At the Moroboshi household, Ten's mother explains she was worried by stories about children turning to delinquency due to being neglected by their working parents; a very accurate worry, given Ten's behavior. Ataru can't resist holding this over Ten's head, of course. Whilst Ten privately resents the idea that his mother might think he's a delinquent, he does think it would be prudent to assert his good boy credentials. Ataru's mother suggests he get her a carnation, and Ten promptly leaves to do just that. On his way home, he gives a spare carnation to a young man, only to then have his bouquet stolen by Torajima. Acting without thinking, Ten burns up the cat and the bouquet in one fiery blast. He goes looking for a replacement, but his luck remains sour; he gets trampled by pigs and beaten up by a pigeon. He considers asking for his carnation back from the young man, but seeing him with his mother convinces Ten he can't do that. Wandering back to the flower seller, she takes pity on him and gives him one for free. But by the time Ten has returned home, his mother has left, convinced that Ten mustn't like her. Fortunately for Ten, Ataru gives him some well-needed thrust, giving the young oni the chance to give his mother the flower and assure her that he loves her.
283 "Fly Away, Shoulder Pain!"
(飛んでけ!肩こり, "Tondeke! katakori")
Chapter 283
Wanting to be helpful, Lum goes to Sakura's office at Tomobiki High School and offers to let her have some Oniboshi moxa intended to cure shoulder aches. But Sakura isn't interested, and when the guys come in after a grueling PE class, none of them are willing to try one of Lum's alien medicines. That evening, feeling insulted, Lum sneakily applies the moxa to Ataru's shoulders. She is rather surprised when it causes him to sprout wings. Ataru is initially angry, so much so that he instinctively follows her out the window, where a delighted Lum spends time teaching him how to fly after assuring him that the wings will fade once his shoulder pain is gone. The next day, Ataru uses his new wings to prank Onsen Mark and try to peep on some girls changing. This results in an angry Lum chasing Ataru around the school, zapping their schoolmates as she tries to hit him. So when the moxa runs its course and the wings detach, Ataru has quite the welcoming committee waiting for him once he lands...
284 "Delinquent Girls-Operation Animals"
(スケ番三人娘、動物作戦, "Sukeban san-nin musume, dobutsu sakusen")
Chapter 284
Once again, the Spice Girls Gang tries to come up with a scheme to beat their self-declared rivals. This time, they set upon the idea of using animals to even the odds... which of course goes horribly wrong. First they vandalize Benten's spaceship with ink from an octopus, and get beaten up. Secondly, they try to intimidate Oyuki with a penguin, only to realize that it actually isn't scary. Finally, they attempt to battle Lum with the aid of an electricity-absorbing alien eel, but they just end up angering the eel and it turns on them alongside Lum. In the end, all they have left are photos of Lum and the eel beating them up.
285 "Pick Your Fish"
(活魚つかみどり, "Ikeuo tsukamidori")
Chapter 285
After grimly assessing that their bank account is going to be in the red this month, which bodes poorly for his plans to reopen the Hamachaya, Ryunosuke's father comes up with a scheme. Several days later, Ataru is presented with a brochure, offering an event at the school pool where, for a cheap price, a person can take home all the fish they can catch. Given the Moroboshi's unreliable finances, Ataru and Lum are sent to participate. Which is when they discover the scam: the pond also contains three very dangerous fish: a shark, a swordfish, and an electric ray. Most of the would-be competitors are scared off, but Ataru is too angry to back down, and leads a charge of several bold teens into the pool. Kotatsu Neko takes down the shark, whilst Ataru disarms the swordfish using the skills he developed battling Mendo, and Lum sucks the charge right out of the electric ray. With the danger gone, everybody comes right back to grab as many fish as they can. Realizing he's going to lose his profit, Mr. Fujinami dons a rubberized seahorse costume and tries to steal all the fish back, only to be defeated.
286 "Tenth-Year Truth"
(十年目の真実, "Juu-nen-me no shinjitsu")
Chapter 286
As the students of Tomobiki High School leave for the day one rainy evening, Onsen Mark is staying behind for night duty. This prompts the principal to reflect on strange, spooky events that happened to another night duty teacher on a rainy night just like this ten years earlier. Although Onsen Mark tries to laugh it off, he can't quite bring himself to do so, reminding himself that Tomobiki High sees a lot of supernatural activity. As he tries to calm himself down, only getting increasingly spooked, Ataru and Lum arrive back at the school, having accompanied Shinobu after she realized she forgot one of her textbooks. They encounter Mendo, who has been waiting here since school let out for a duel that Ataru sarcastically promised him, but never intended to actually attend. This realization further enrages Mendo, who attacks Ataru and begins to chase him around the school. This ends up being the last straw for Onsen Mark, who proceeds to attack the two boys in a paranoid frenzy. By the time school begins the next morning, all three have been chasing each other around and brawling the entire night.
287 "Picking Hangya"
(はんぎゃ摘み, "Hangya tsumi")
Chapter 287
On a "date" with Rei, Ran asks if Rei doesn't get tired of just eating taiyaki all the time, and offers to make him anything he wants for their next date. Whilst Rei is "thinking", an alien bat flies into his mouth and stabs his tongue, causing Ran to mistake his cry of pain for his request. As it turns out, there really is a food called "hangya"; a fruit from the 4th-dimensional forest, only found in the garden of a cannibal witch. Undeterred, Ran sets out to pick some, only to find the only accessible opening to that part of the 4th-dimensional forest is in the Moroboshi household. Ran marches right on in, kicks aside the table, and enters the rift, unwittingly dragging Lum and Ataru along for the ride. After some bickering, they make their way to the witch's hut, where the witch offers Ran a trade; all the hangya she wants if the witch can eat Lum and Ataru. Ran barely hesitates before agreeing, tricking the two by telling them that the witch wants their help cooking dinner as payment. Oblivious to her true intentions, they go to help out; Lum is told to prepare a side dish (to which she sets to work with her usual fiery concoctions), whilst Ataru is told to haul water. He, of course, abandons this quest to ingratiate himself with Ran by picking the hangya fruit for her. This causes the witch to get suspicious and go after him, whereupon her talking cauldron spills the beans to Lum. The angry oni tears off after them, beats up the witch, tells Ataru what is going on, gives the witch back the hangya fruit as punishment to Ran for her betrayal, and drags Ran and Ataru home. At her next date with Rei, Ran apologizes for not getting him the hangya and offers another treat instead, only to mistake Rei's sneeze for something called "hahabushi".
288 "Swimsuit Rhapsody"
(水着ラプソディー, "Mizugi rapusodî")
Chapter 288
Lum arrives at Tomobiki High School only to remember that she forgot her swimsuit for swim class. She heads to the school store, and finds the Fujinamis brawling; Ryunosuke's father is insisting she wear the boy's school swimsuit, nothing more than a set of swim trunks, and she won't stand for it. Unfortunately, he manages to beat her in a fight, and Lum has to take her to Sakura's office. The nurse offers Ryunosuke a girl's swimsuit she prepared earlier, anticipating such nonsense, but Ryunosuke turns her down; her pride won't accept a handout. She insists she can only wear girl's clothing if she does it by the terms her father set when they moved here - after beating him in battle. Sakura, Lum and Ataru point out that's unlikely; the two Fujinamis are evenly matched physically, but the father has far more cunning. Ataru tries to help Ryunosuke by encouraging her to defeat her father in a sneak attack, but she's too honorable and gets beaten. Talking about her failure in class, Ataru, Mendo and Lum suggest that Ryunosuke steal her father's most precious possession and ransom it back for a girl's swimsuit. Ryunosuke promptly charges off to ask her dad what his treasure is. When he says it's Ryunosuke herself, Ataru and Mendo pretend to take her hostage, only for Ryunosuke to beat them up. She challenges her father to a duel for the swimsuit, and he promptly tries to sabotage her with drugged rice - Ryunosuke has wised up to that trick, however. The two begin to brawl, and with some advice from Ataru and Mendo, and a blinding solar reflection from the principal's bald head, Ryunosuke wins and claims the swimsuit. Unfortunately, her dad gets the last laugh, giving her a boy's wrestling singlet instead.
289 "The Zen Club"
(反省座禅会, "Hansei zazen-kai")
Chapter 289
One of Onsen Mark's classes goes spectacularly wrong as a multi-layered duel between Ataru, Ten, Mendo, Lum, Shinobu and Ran leaves the school half-leveled. Determined to punish them, the principal orders them all to report to the hermitage to reflect on their collective bad behavior. This goes absolutely wrong; refusing to accept responsibility from the start, being held in close proximity just leads to another massive brawl that ultimately results in the hermitage being leveled.
290 "Wish Upon A Star"
(星に願いを, "Hoshi ni negai o")
Chapter 290
It's Tanabata, and the Moroboshi household are about to eat dinner when a star crashes through their roof and tells them that they have won three wishes. Mr. and Mrs. Moroboshi are skeptical at first, until it uses one of their three wishes to fix all the damage. Realizing it's for real, everybody starts arguing over what to use the remaining two wishes for. It only gets worse when Cherry shows up and steals one of the wishes to get himself a bowl of yakisoba. With just one wish left, the arguing and bickering gets worse, until, informed that the star must leave at dawn wishes or no wishes, they reluctantly agree to hold an amida lottery. Mr. Moroboshi wins, only to find that the star has drunk itself into a stupor whilst they were quarreling. Cherry promptly wastes the last wish to wake the star up and it leaves, with the Moroboshi having achieved nothing.
291 "Special Delivery Kiss ♥"
(口づけ♥速達小包, "Kuchizuke ♥ sokutatsu kozutsumi")
Chapter 291
An alien courier suddenly arrives for Lum at Class 2-4 and delivers a package from somebody named Pikumo. Inside is a talking frog that begs Lum for a kiss. She goes to throw it out the window, but then remembers that Pikumo was a friend of hers from when she was a little girl. Back then, he fell afoul of the curse game and needed her curse to be changed back from a frog. He apologizes, and explains that three days ago, he bumped into an old friend, they got drunk, and they played the curse game, which he lost. His request makes Mendo incredibly jealous, especially once he sees photos that prove Pikumo is actually very good looking. This encourages Lum to try and use Pikumo to make Ataru jealous, which does initially seem to work... but then Ataru declares that if Lum can kiss some guy, he should get to kiss some girl. Lum naturally finds fault with that logic. After some bickering, and realizing that Ataru really is jealous after all, she kisses Pikumo, who thanks her and then flies away.
292 "Sibling ★ Battle of Love - Part 1"
(兄弟★愛の戦い;前編, "Kyodai ★ ai no tatakai; zenpen")
Chapter 292
It's breakfast time at the Mizunokoji estate, and Tobimaro is full of anxiety, as he can see how his sister Asuka's innocently romantic behavior is driving his mother apoplectic. When Asuka licks a grain of rice from Tobimaro's cheek, that's the last straw. Mrs. Mizunokoji goes to Class 2-4 and begs Lum to help; her plan is to have Tobimaro fight a duel against Asuka, and she believes that Lum's technology can give him the advantage. As Lum sits Tobimaro up in a set of power armor, Mrs. Mizunokoji lays down the stakes for Asuka. Initial tests prove Tobimaro can't even move in the armor unless Lum remote controls it, but the suit does seem strong enough to do the job. Unfortunately, Lum left a key piece out so it overheats and explodes. That evening, Ataru suggests that they weaken Asuka, and once Mrs. Mizunokoji takes him hostage, Lum agrees to use some of her alien botany to both boost Tobimaro's strength and impede Asuka's movement. A good plan, with one key flaw; both plants are powered by sunlight, and the day of the duel is overcast with promise of rain...
293 "Sibling ★ Battle of Love - Part 2"
(兄弟★愛の戦い;後編, "Kyodai ★ ai no tatakai; koupen")
Chapter 293
Asuka and Tobimaro face off, their "relationship" on the line in their duel. When the sun comes out, Tobimaro becomes strong enough to match his sister, who is hindered by sticky, clinging vines, but when the sun goes away, they revert to their usual power dynamic. The result is a chaotic melee as the balance of power shifts back and forth, with the intervention of Ataru and Lum only making things worse. Finally, at a key moment, Asuka manages to overcome her brother, but her mother refuses to concede defeat; she will break Asuka of her incestuous infatuation!
294 "Pool of Rage"
(怒りのプール, "Ikari no puru")
Chapter 294
Mendo invites his classmates from Class 2-4 to check out his newest beachfront pool, one filled with water piped directly from the Sea of Japan whilst the pool itself is situated on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Their usual antics are interrupted by a very unexpected visitor; a giant and extremely angry squid, which attacks Mendo ferociously. It turns out that Mendo's fancy pipeline has sucked the squid's little babies up, but fortunately for Mendo, the squid and its children are reunited, calming its rage. However, they show no inclination to leave the pool.
295 "Slippery Soap"
(つるつるソープ, "Tsurutsuru sopu")
Chapter 295
Lum tries her hand at soap making, though she pays only half attention to the instructions on the television, before she goes to meet Ataru, Sakura and Kotatsu Neko for a game of mixed doubles tennis. After the game, she and Sakura go for a shower, but she accidentally squirts her soap into Sakura's stall. Sakura unwittingly gives Lum back the wrong bar of soap, and by the time she's figured it out, she's lathered herself up. As they soon get a hands-on demonstration, this now makes Sakura super slippery; a simple hug launches her flying into the air like a squeezed bar of wet soap. Sakura tries to ignore this and goes for a date with Tsubame, who is feeling rather insecure about their relationship. Her super-slick skin causing his hand to slide off whenever he touches her, and a jealous Ataru almost literally whispering doubts into his ear, doesn't help matters. Sakura tries to straighten him out that it's just Lum's soap preventing them from touching, but Tsubame is too caught up in his melodramas to listen - especially when he hugs her and launches her into a tree without realizing it. Trying to be helpful, Lum sprays Sakura with bird lime and then pushes her into Tsubame, sticking them both together in a way they didn't intend.
296 "Beach Cafe Summer"
(浜茶屋の夏, "Hamachaya no natsu")
Chapter 296
Ataru, Lum, Shinobu and Mendo head to the beach, following an invitation to see the new version of the Hamachaya. They find a decrepit wreck, with only Mr. Fujinami present. He claims that Ryunosuke has suddenly turned into a delinquent, only for his daughter to arrive and beat him up. She explains to her friends that she has given up on working for her father and is trying to go it solo as a beach cafe operative. She shows off that she's doing well, until her father arrives to pick a fight. The two get into a fanciful beach vendor's duel, putting on amazing feats of simultaneous acrobatics and cooking that have an appreciative audience throwing them yen. This ends their brief reconciliation when Ryunosuke's father tries to steal the money for himself. They are suddenly interrupted by various other vendors, who take all the money to begin paying off the sizable debts that Ryunosuke's father has allowed to build up over his incompetency as the Hamachaya's manager.
297 "Toll of the Wind Chime"
(風鈴樹の音色, "Furinju no neiro")
Chapter 297
During a visit to Neptune, Lum's visitation with Oyuki is interrupted by a merchant come to buy some of Neptune's bell fruits, which resemble Japanese wind chimes. She is enchanted by their appearance, and Oyuki gives her fruit-bearing branch as a souvenir. She arrives home to find the Moroboshis suffering through a summer heatwave, being too poor to afford air conditioning. Wanting to be helpful, she hangs her bell fruit in the nearby window, and they discover it emits a surge of chill air when disturbed. It also is still alive enough to multiply, and soon they can hang bell fruits all over, creating a lovely air conditioned environment. But the bell fruits start to multiply out of control, growing into the framework of the house and turning its interior into a frozen icebox. Desperate for help, Lum calls Oyuki, who soon arrives with more bell fruit merchants who eagerly harvest the fruits and then leave. Noting that the fruits seem to grow better on Earth than on Neptune, she asks if the Moroboshis would consider raising bell fruits for her, and they agree if she'll give them 60% of the proceeds.
298 "The Home Visit Blues"
(涙の家庭訪問, "Namida no katei homon")
Chapter 298
As a school day ends, Onsen Mark announces he will be making home visits to Class 2-4. Although the Principal and Sakura both try to talk him out of it, he goes, and it proves an unmitigated disaster. He gets beaten up by the Fujinamis, intimidated and then beaten up by Mendo's family goon squad, beaten up by a paranoid Shinobu, and finally collapses in the Moroboshi household's genkan and is left to rot there. When he recovers his strength, he drags himself home, only to be abducted by a well-meaning Lum, who takes him to visit her parents. They greet him warmly and shower him with food and drink, the most flat-out hospitable family he's seen yet. In fact, Lum's father takes such a shine to Onsen Mark as a drinking partner that he won't let him leave, causing him to miss school the next day.
299 "The Haunted Parasol"
(妖精のパラソル, "Yosei no parasoru")
Chapter 299
The day after a rather rough night in Ataru's bedroom, Ten is wandering around Tomobiki when he hears a voice calling from a puddle. He looks at it, and discovers a little figure, which claims to be a fairy that drifts from place to place, granting children their dreams. He explains that he took shelter from a storm inside this puddle the last night, and the wind snatched away his magical umbrella, which he begs Ten to find. The infant Oni goes in search, only to find it in the clutches of Torajima. He gets it back from the cat, but the wind blows it away from him and into Lum's grasp. Before Ten can get it back from her, she gives it to a nestful of bird chicks, whose mother beats Ten up when he tries to take it back. He steals some of the washing line to get it back, which attracts Ataru's attention, and soon the two boys are fighting over it. Through a mixture of luck and Lum's intervention, Ten takes the umbrella back to the fairy, who assures Ten he will find his dream at the end of a rainbow he conjures. Ten eagerly follows it, but finds his reward is just a jumble of random things from a nightmare he had the previous evening.
300 "The Girl in the Photograph"
(写真の中の女, "Shashin no naka no onna")
Chapter 300
The kitsune who is love with Shinobu Miyaki eavesdrops on a grandmother telling her grandchild a bedtime story about a fox who saved a girl that was trapped in a painting by an oni's curse by defeating the oni, which required making it mad and then grabbing its horns. This puts him in the mood to visit Shinobu, so he hitches a ride on a truck to Tomobiki. When he gets there, he is nearly trampled by Soban, who drops a photo of Shinobu. Never having seen one before, the kitsune believes it's the same as in the story he heard the previous evening. He tries and fails to pick a fight with Lum to save Shinobu. Then he spots Ten fighting with Torajima and tries to grab Ten's horn instead, only to be knocked out in the process. When he comes to, Shinobu has wandered onto the scene, and the kitsune is very glad to see her. Though he is quite puzzled when the three teens take a photo of him in Shinobu's arms.
