Chapter # Title
334 "Mastering the Path to Poverty"
(極めよ、貧乏道, "Kiwame yo, binboudou")
Chapter 334
At the Mendo estate, Shutaro Mendo is called to a meeting with his father, who explains that as a test of his worth to inherit the Mendo conglomerate, Mendo must clear a trial known as "the poverty room", with the aid of only Ataru and Lum's instructions. The first obstacle they meet is several boys from Tomobiki High, playing the role of debtors; despite Ataru's advice, Mendo simply pays them off and goes on. Next, they encounter a staged scenario of Shinobu being reclaimed as payment for her father's debts. Following his perverse code of chivalry, Mendo pays off Shinobu's father's debts. And then they run into about a dozen other girls in the same scenario, and Mendo buys them all off. He then goes to treat his entourage, only to find himself short of the price - and the nearby ATM closes when he attempts to withdraw money. The girls promptly abandon him to his newest debtor. Mendo goes in search of money, but is cornered by more debtors, and so he is forced to proceed with several heavy blocks on his back to represent his debt. After an arduous treck, he comes to the final challenge; limboing under a bar. Undaunted, Mendo falls onto his back and drags himself forward by his toes, having just enough clearance to squeeze under and pass the trial.
335 "Memory Timebomb"
(思い出は時限爆弾, "Omoide wa jigenbakudan")
Chapter 335
Lum, Oyuki, Benten and Ran are attending their Junior High School reunion when the topic of one of their teachers, Libertine Crab, comes up. Lum, Ran and Benten reminisce on how much they didn't like that teacher, reflecting on how they got so fed up with him they strapped a timebomb to his back, only for Lum to goof up and set the timer for 3 years. When they meet up with the crustacean-shaped robot, they discover the bomb's still there. Ran wants to run away, but Lum and Benten are determined to see the explosion. Then he gives them some photos he took of them on the day they graduated, and with three minutes left on the timer, Lum and Benten change their mind, grabbing Ran and forcing her to help them to try and remove it. But it's stuck tight, and with it set to go off, they try and flee, only for the oblivious teacher to grab them, intent on getting a photo. Ironically, the teacher barely even noticed the detonation - the three girls weren't so unscathed.
336 "The Octopus Summoning Flute"
(タコを呼ぶ笛, "Tako o yobu fue")
Chapter 336
At the Mendo Estate, Shutaro Mendo proudly shows off his latest acquisition; a special flute that summons all octopi within a 50km radius when blown. It works spectacularly. But then Ryoko shows up and throws it clear over the estate walls to try and get her lazy dog Hayatemaru to fetch it. Mendo dispatches his goons to retrieve it, but they can't find it. Suddenly, all of Mendo's octopi go scuttling off, forcing Mendo and his goons to chase after them on a two-fold mission; find the flute, and protect Mendo's beloved pets from the citizens of Tomobiki, who take one look and think "free all-you-can-catch takoyaki". After some initial mishaps, the flute turns out to be in the hands of Kotatsu Neko, who violently resists Mendo's attempts to reclaim it. Ataru bribes the bakeneko with a deluxe kotatsu, but when the bakeneko throws the flute across in trade, Hayatemaru suddenly appears and grabs it, crushing it in his jaws. Mendo retreats to his estate, and tries to buy an octopus drum to replace the broken flute.
337 "Fly, Carrier Pigeon of Love"
(飛べ、愛の伝書鳩, "Tobe, ai no denshobato")
Chapter 337
Inspired by a TV commercial, Ten buys a robot messenger pigeon in hopes that when it delivers a love letter from him to Sakura, she will fall in love with him. Lum is skeptical that Ten has gotten suckered again, but Ten is adamant that this decision was worth it. But first, the pigeon needs to be acquainted with Sakura before it can deliver to her. He takes it to Tomobiki High School, and after some shenanigans, manages to show her to it... but the pigeon falls head-over-heels in love with Sakura itself. To the point that when Ten writes a letter, the pigeon tears it up and writes her a love letter for itself. This prompts a fight between oni and pigeon, which Lum stumbles across; despite Ten's denials, she can see this was another stupid purchase, and she resolves to confiscate Ten's allowance until he learns to stop buying such junk. Ten and the pigeon both write their love letters and fly to Sakura, fighting along the way... only to arrive just as she tears up a love letter from Ataru, mocking the idea. Returning to Lum's UFO, Ten demands the pigeon take a request for a refund to its company, but it refuses, with Lum pointing out it's only supposed to deliver love letters.
338 "Fortress of Fastidiousness - Part 1"
(潔癖の要塞;前編, "Keppeki no yousai; zenpen")
Chapter 338
It's early morning on the Mizunokoji estate, and Asuka is informed by her mother that today, she begins a new Junior High school. Asuka is nervous, but when she arrives, the principal assures her that Fastidious Female Junior High For Girls prohibits all male presence on school grounds. To guard against intrusion by horny boys, the campus is enclosed by a 30 meter tall wall, on the other side of which is a moat infested with crocodiles and the grounds themselves are patrolled by packs of dobermans, with both the crocs and the dogs trained to hate boys. Asuka is delighted. Once she and her mother have left the principal's office, she is phoned by the principal of Tomobiki High School, who wants to collaborate with her on a physical fitness test, and she agrees. When the news is posted, the boys of Tomobiki High are very interested... except for Mendo, who tells them that he's heard of this school, especially its fearsome security systems. Asuka gets to see these first hand when she accidentally throws a ball over the wall and it gets zapped by laser guns. Lum flies over the wall without issue and delivers the letter from her principal to Asuka's... which is that he will telephone her moments later to establish the target; the boys from Tomobiki High will be striving to collect an armband from one of Fastidious Female's weekly duty officers. And with that settled, the contest soon begins... with Asuka as one of the duty officers.
339 "Fortress of Fastidiousness - Part 2"
(潔癖の要塞;中編, "Keppeki no yousai; chuhen")
Chapter 339
The Tomobiki High boys begin their assault on Fastidious Female. Despite the principal's confidence that her defenses are impervious, she hasn't reckoned on Tomobiki High's breed of lustful stubbornness. They batter through the wall and fight through the crocodiles, with Ataru leading the way and Lum inadvertently taking down the dogs with a missed blast of lightning as she tries to stop Ataru. Refusing to admit defeat, the principal orders the duty officers to report to the Lotus Tower, where she locks them all in to keep them away from the seeking boys... leaving Asuka stranded outside, having been scared away by the sight of first Ataru and then his classmates. When she hears this, the principal goes to see, calling Asuka to join her on the roof. When she learns of Asuka's androphobia, she gives her a set of glasses, assuring her that she will have nothing to fear of any man so long as she wears them.
340 "Fortress of Fastidiousness - Part 3"
(潔癖の要塞;後編, "Keppeki no yousai; kouhen")
Chapter 340
A bemused Asuka asks her how the glasses will protect her from the scary boys, and her principal assures her that no boy will "come near" her as long as she wears them. Cautiously, Asuka drops to the ground. The principal's words prove true... by a certain interpretation of "true". The boys recognize Asuka and her crazy strength, so they back away from her rather than risk getting in arm's length. Moreover, the glasses use special lenses that make the boys appear much further away than they actually are. Convinced that they work, she returns to the principal, who declares that Asuka may keep them if she promises to protect her armband from any who'd try to take it. Meanwhile, the Tomobiki High boys are searching the school's interior for the other weekly duty officers. Mendo finds them and lets them out, but Ataru steals the credit, only to get distracted by the sudden arrival of Asuka. Thanks to her glasses, she doesn't freak out when he grabs her wrists, until Ataru foolishly raises her glasses. She sends him flying, only to realizes the glasses went with him, and she gives pursuit. Behind her, the duty officers give their armbands to the principal and suggest that she lock them in the safe. Asuka pursues her cherished glasses, accidentally leveling the protective wall, whereupon the Tomobiki High principal declares the fitness test over, with Fastidious Female being the victors. The female principal exults in her success, ignorant of the friendly accord struck up between her girls and the boys from Tomobiki High.
341 "Nagisa's Fiance - Part 1"
(渚のフィアンセ;前編, "Nagisa no fianse; zenpen")
Chapter 341
Ataru, Lum, Mendo and Shinobu fly one of Mendo's helicopters out to visit the Fujinamis on their newly acquired private island. Which turns out to be a tiny, deserted spit of land 4 miles from the nearest coast. When they land, Ryunosuke is furiously calling her father out on how stupid a purchase this was. When they ask how Mr. Fujinami afforded it, he says it was a bargain-price gift from an old friend. That evening, as Ryunosuke is bathing, she feels eyes on her and throws her pail at her voyeur. She expects to hit Ataru, only for her pail to sail right through the form of a beautiful young girl, who disappears into thin air. As night falls, Mr. Fujinami admits that the island's previous owner, his friend Mr. Shiowatari and his daughter Nagisa, passed away under unusual circumstances. This caused them to linger in this world as ghosts, who promptly introduce themselves. They are particularly pleased to meet Ryunosuke, explaining that Nagisa and Ryunosuke were engaged to be married due to a promise their fathers made before either was born. Nagisa is smitten with Ryunosuke, who is simply enraged. They explain that they died from overeating when they tried to invent sea urchin-flavored kakigori, and whilst Mr. Shiowatari can pass on with Mr. Fujinami's promise he will try to perfect the recipe, Nagisa wants something more: she wants a kiss from Ryunosuke...
342 "Nagisa's Fiance - Part 2"
(渚のフィアンセ;後編, "Nagisa no fianse; koupen")
Chapter 342
Ryunosuke has no desire to kiss another girl, ghost with unfulfilled desires or not. But her father and friends all decide that in this case, sacrifices must be made. Her father knocks Ryunosuke unconscious, but when Nagisa tries to kiss her, she can't due to her ghostly nature. Fortunately for Nagisa, this is the one night of each year when the giant sea urchin crawls ashore to lay her eggs; by drinking its tears, Nagisa is restored to life, and immediately begins trying to kiss Ryunosuke. The crossdressing tomboy refuses and runs away, but Nagisa catches her and pins her. Ryunosuke finally manages to reveal that she is a girl, which is when she gets a shock: Nagisa is actually a boy, and already knew Ryunosuke was a girl. Before the ex-ghost can kiss her, the sun comes up, and with it Mr. Shiowatari passes on to the afterlife. But Nagisa is now alive once more, and so he resumes chasing Ryunosuke in hopes of getting that kiss.
343 "Morning Glory, the Counterattack of Rage"
(朝顔、怒りの逆襲, "Asagao, ikari no gyakushu")
Chapter 343
Lum and Ataru are attending a local festival when they pass by a stall whose owner tries to sell Lum a morning glory. The oni turns him down with unusual coldness, and once they leave, the morning glory reveals itself to be a kind of cyborg; half alien plant, and half robot. It chases after them, and reveals it was a summer homework assignment that Lum received as a little girl, but she never completed it - rather than draw the morning glory like she was supposed to, she threw it into a ravine. Driven by revenge, it has come for Lum after ten long years. Lum tries to fly away, but it gives chase, pursuing her near Ran's spaceship. Ran shoots the morning glory cyborg down, and after some banter, it reveals that because Lum never drew it, it's been held back in its own school for a decade. Hearing this cool's Lum's wrath, and she agrees to draw it first thing in the morning. Ironically, the next morning, she wakes up and the morning glory doesn't, so she decides to just draw it as it sleeps.
344 "Rage, Sherbert"
(怒れ、シャーベット, "Ikare, shabetto")
Chapter 344
Oyuki invites Lum, Benten and Ran to visit her newest business venture; a ranch for sherberts, a flying Neptunian creature that can create ice cream cones. They point out it's hard to judge the taste of ice cream on a frozen world, and Ran asks to be allowed to take one to Earth to try selling its products there. Oyuki agrees, but warns Ran that she will be expected to recompense her for anything that goes wrong. As it's the middle of summer in Tomobiki, Ran makes a killing with her sherbert, but the heat shorts out its air-conditioned cage, making it viciously aggressive. When it attacks Lum, she blasts it in retaliation, releasing the creature. The three alien girls desperately try to recapture it, with Benten's bike taking a savage beating from it. Unfortunately for Benten, Oyuki appears just in time to hear Benten badmouthing her, and after she calms her sherbert, she freezes Benten and Ran solid as punishment.
