345 "The Horse and the Young Lady"
(馬と令嬢, "Uma to reijo")
Chapter 345
Ataru, Lum, Shinobu and Mendo arrive on the beach for a pleasant day out, only to run into Cherry and Sakura. The mystics explain that they have been called out by the local town to exorcise the ghost of a horse that has been haunting this very beach. It originally belonged to a wealthy young girl, and the two doted on each other, but it was left behind when she left to get married at the age of 18 some 50 years go. Having died of old age, it's begun haunting the beach, sowing chaos as it looks for its former mistress. No sooner has the explanation finished than the spirit horse shows up. It attempts to carry off Sakura, Shinobu and Lum, forcing Ataru and Mendo to team up to take it down. As they debate how to quell the restless spirit, a woman starts shouting the horse's name; it's his mistress, returned at long last. Unfortunately, being nearly 70 means she's become old, fat and ugly, which horrifies the ghostly horse so much it flees into the sea, never to be seen again.
346 "Love and Valor of the Flower Petal - Part 1"
(愛と勇気の花一輪;前編, "Ai to yuki no hana ichi-rin; zenpen")
Chapter 346
Shinobu is waiting for Ataru and Lum to arrive so they can see a movie, but the couple are late, leaving Shinobu feeling rather humiliated. When they finally do arrive, Lum's explanation that Ataru delayed them by hitting on girls is the last straw, and she storms off. As she muses over how hard it has been to meet a nice guy, she stumbles across Inaba, who has something important to ask her: he wants her to be his girlfriend. After some fumbling, largely provoked by Ataru, he explains that he has to perform a quest to receive a promotion at his job, but the quest entails going with his girlfriend to pick a rare flower in the space-time forest. Shinobu takes pity on him and agrees, and the two set off, with Ataru and Lum insisting on tagging along. After officially confirming he's beginning the quest with his supervisors, Inaba leads the group to an ominous set of doors, which he opens to reveal... a woman's bathroom, full of bathing beauties!
347 "Love and Valor of the Flower Petal - Part 2"
(愛と勇気の花一輪;中編, "Ai to yuki no hana ichi-rin; chupen")
Chapter 347
Ataru immediately starts making a nuisance of himself by hitting on the bathing girls, with Lum trying to stop him. Shinobu takes this in stride and gets ready to cross the bathroom to reach the door on the other side; Inaba, on the other hand, can't initially bring himself to enter, turning into a blushing mess. The rabbits showing up to mock Inaba for his embarrassment is the last straw for Shinobu, who gives him a push, causing him to slip on a bar of soap and skid across the room to his destination. When Inaba explains he's never seen a naked girl before, Shinobu actually finds that kind of cute. Suddenly, magical shackles descend from the sky, clamping them together into boy/girl couples... but it selects Ataru and Shinobu as well as Lum and Inaba. An impromptu three-legged race ensues, until they reach a fork with signs saying "Heaven" and "Hell". They initially plan to take the Heaven route, but Ataru spots a girl in distress on the Hell route and goes to her rescue. A Buddha-like figure praises them on not being fooled by the illusion, for this is the true heavenly path. He offers them the key to their shackles, but then throws it, forcing them to chase it into a body of water. Ataru and Lum are lured away by a mermaid, but before Inaba and Shinobu can follow, a second mermaid snares Shinobu's foot in her prehensile hair. She offers to release the girl if Inaba will kiss her, and when he refuses, jabs Shinobu's side so she loses precious air, forcing him to accept. But Shinobu doesn't see the context, she just sees Inaba going in for a kiss. Her rage-fueled strength lets her tear the hair apart and she swims for shore, where she chastises Inaba for doing something so Ataru-like and declares her intent to leave. However, despite Inaba's warnings, she walks right into a space-time distortion and ends up falling through a void... and Ataru & Lum are nowhere useful.
348 "Love and Valor of the Flower Petal - Part 3"
(愛と勇気の花一輪;後編, "Ai to yuki no hana ichi-rin; koupen")
Chapter 348
Inaba leaps after Shinobu and manages to catch her, warning that as a human, if she gets lost here, she'll be trapped forever. Still bitter over seeing Inaba nearly kiss that mermaid, Shinobu responds with cold politeness, determined to leave. Inaba is adamant that he escort her, though she refuses to let him explain. Suddenly, a gaggle of bunnygirls beckons Inaba to a shortcut to the exit, but insist that only bunnies like themselves and Inaba can use it. They promise that they will take Shinobu to safety and that one of them will go with Inaba to pick the flower he needs, but Inaba refuses. Not even seeing that the other door requires him to defeat a monster changes his mind. When Shinobu protests and asks why he's doing this, he tells her that he's afraid of never seeing her again. A violent brawl ensues, and Inaba wins, although he is left unconscious afterwards. A mournful Shinobu drags him through the door into an area with the rabbits, who declare that Inaba clearly won't complete his quest. But Shinobu won't let Inaba fail, and drags him to where the flower resides, only to find it's half-wilted, and a sign says that only a blooming flower will result in a promotion. Regaining consciousness, Inaba shrugs it off; all he really cared about was getting to spend time with Shinobu, and because of that, he's happy. Realizing that Inaba genuinely cares for her makes Shinobu happy too, and this causes the flower to bloom, with Shinobu promising to wait for Inaba's next visit.
349 "An Offensive [and Defensive] Night - Part 1"
(一夜の攻防戦;前編, "Hitoya no kobosen; zenpen")
Chapter 349
The Fujinamis have returned to Tomobiki at last, and they've brought Ryunosuke's fiancé Nagisa with them. Ryunosuke isn't thrilled about their doing so; in her opinion, Nagisa is a lazy, greedy, crybaby freeloader, and she vents about this to her friends in class. That evening, her father announces he's off on a trip to a hot spring, so he's leaving the two of them alone together for the night. As soon as he's gone, Ryunosuke locks Nagisa out, and the peeved boy simply punches through the wall and follows her, only to accidentally stumble onto her as she's changing, to both teens' chagrin. Nagisa declares her intent to spend the night elsewhere, refusing to sleep under the same roof as Nagisa without a chaperone, and he asks if she's afraid of him. Ryunosuke's pride can't handle this, and she attacks Nagisa - to her shock, he blocks her hits without even flinching, then slings her over his shoulders. Suddenly, an exorcism ofuda comes wafting through the air and lands on Nagisa's forehead, and he screams, drops Ryunosuke, and flees in a panic. Sakura steps forward, explaining she was worried about a situation like this, and offers to let Ryunosuke stay with her for the night, but the tomboy refuses, believing that to leave now would be to admit to cowardice.
350 "An Offensive [and Defensive] Night - Part 2"
(一夜の攻防戦;後編, "Hitoya no kobosen; koupen")
Chapter 350
Sakura, Ataru and Lum arrive at the sight of the Fujinami home just as Ryunosuke chases Nagisa outside, demanding they have a fight to "settle things". A confused Nagisa points out that they already did that, and an embarrassed Ryunosuke protests that it didn't count, as she was going easy on him - to the shock of their audience, as Ryunosuke's never lost a fight to anyone other than her father before. Reluctantly, Nagisa agrees to the battle, clearly not wanting to do so. Whilst Ryunosuke lands the first blow, leaping over a charging Nagisa and kicking him in the back of the head, it's the only one she lands; Nagisa proceeds to effortlessly dodge her until she demands he get serious and attack her. He promptly catches her in a bear hug, holding her aloft and crushing her until Ryunosuke, unable to fight free, has no choice but to admit defeat. Nagisa reveals that before his death and revival, he would compete in the beach sumo tournaments every year, and won every time. A humiliated Ryunosuke accuses Nagisa of condescending to her, pointing out he wasn't even trying until the very end. A morose Nagisa asks her if she could hit a girl that she had a crush on, and starts to gather his things to leave. But Ryunosuke declares he can't leave; she won't let him until she settles the score by beating him. Nagisa happily accepts... though their first night is spoiled when he rolls into her bedroll whilst in the throes of a dream.
351 "Terror of the Girly-Eyes Measels"
(乙女バシカの恐怖, "Otome bashika no kyofu")
Chapter 351
Ataru is walking through the streets of Tomobiki one day when he encounters Ten, trying to hide from Lum, who wants to give him a medicinal shot. Ataru catches the young oni and calls out to Lum, who takes them both home. She explains that Ten has an infectious disease, one that only affects boys, so both Ten and Ataru will need shots and quarantine. Ataru naturally protests this interruption of his skirt-chasing, but Lum explains the disease is the dreaded Damsel-Eyed Measels, which causes boys' eyes to grow wide and sparkly like a cute anime girl's - and humans evidently show the symptoms much sooner than oni do, for Ataru's eyes have already changed. She finally convinces Ataru to get treated by asking what if he infects the four most ugly men he knows; the principal, Onsen Mark, Mr. Fujinami, and Cherry? That mental image is all Ataru needs to sit down and hold out his arm. Lum injects both boys, and notes that this single shot is all that's needed to clear up the disease. Seeing his eyes are back to normal, Ataru runs away before Lum notes that they'll still need 2-3 days of bedrest. She quickly chases after Ataru, explaining that the symptoms will flare up and subside for a couple of days, insisting that he has to come home and go into quarantine. Ataru refuses and runs off; when he infects Mendo, that's the last straw for Lum and she whips out a birdlime gun. Realizing he's still infectious, Ataru runs to Sakura's shrine, looking for treatment, only to run right into the principal, Onsen Mark, Mr. Fujinami, and Cherry as they enjoy a game of scrabble. Lum hits Ataru and the four men in the birdlime, but when she fishes Ataru out, she comes face to face with all five in damsel-eyes mode. The sight is so horrific that she faints, and three days later is still convalescing, being tended to by a repentant Ataru.
352 "Goat and Cheese"
(ヤギさんとチーズ, "Yagi-san to chizu")
Chapter 352
Ataru, Lum and Shinobu are visiting the Mendo estate when they stumble across a statue of a goat. They comment on how oddly misplaced it is, and Mendo explains the statue honors the pet of his great-grandfather. There's also reputedly a curse on it, so one must never be photographed whilst the statue is visible. Suddenly, Mendo's father shows up and takes several photos of them. Mendo confiscates these photos and the four teens go to Sakura, who notes that there is a living ghost in each photo - a goat that they all confirm wasn't there when the pictures were taken. Returning to the Mendo estate, now accompanied by Sakura, Mr. Mendo explains that his grandfather long ago had a photo taken of himself, his wife, his child, and his pet goat. The goat was added to be the center of the photo, for superstition held that anyone in the photo's center would die early. When the goat did die, the guilty owner erected the statue in an effort to appease its spirit. Now, whenever somebody takes a photo near the statue, a goat appears in all the photos, and then the goat appears in real life to eat those photos. And when that happens, the subjects die. As night falls, Sakura erects a protective mandela against the ghost-goat's attack. Ryoko suddenly shows up, scaring them all, and then she is followed by a goat. Sakura tries to exorcise it, but it simply eats her charm, and then it eats the photos. However... it was just Ryoko's pet goat. But then Mr. Mendo arrives with the real ghost goat. And he also made copies of all the cursed pictures too. As everyone starts closing angrily in on him, he protests that the "curse" is all bunkum and the "victims" all died of old age, but that doesn't help his case.
353 "I Howl at the Moon"
(月に吠える, "Tsuki ni hoeru")
Chapter 353
In her UFO, Lum cooks up a batch of homemade sweet dumplings, hoping to engage in some moon viewing with her beloved Ataru. Who is suspicious of the dumplings' providence, but eats once she assures him they were store-bought. When he finds out that she actually cooked them, he doesn't take it well, pointing out that Lum's alien cooking has a bad track record. One that isn't improving any time soon, as he suddenly turns into a humanoid wolf! He orders her to go and fetch an antidote, then heads inside to sulk. However, he finds his parents so unsympathetic that he leaves to take a walk. He decides to use his monstrous new visage to go and scare Onsen Mark, only to find he too has transformed, as Lum gave him some of her spare dumplings. Lum arrives and gives Onsen Mark the antidote, but it turns out to be super spicy. Ataru runs away, demanding a better-tasting medicine, and evades Lum's pursuit. Intent on making Lum feel bad for causing this easily-avoidable mess, he takes off his shirt and puts it on a stray dog whose features look a lot like his own, watching from the shadows as Lum finds it. She gives it the antidote, but when it fails to work, she breaks down in tears, sobbing that she just wanted to do something nice for Ataru. That makes Ataru feel guilty, but when he realizes he really has transformed fully into a wolf, he panics and attracts Lum's attention, meekly taking her medicine. Unfortunately for him, the advanced mutation means he needs a large dose.
354 "Catch the Heart"
(Haato o tsukame, "ハートをつかめ")
Chapter 354
As Ran heads off to another date with Rei, she encounters a merchant who offers her a bag of Soul-Snatch Sugar, magical candies which, when eaten, cause the consumer to sprout a heart above their head and fall desperately in love with whoever holds it. Ran eagerly buys it, but when she tries to use it, Rei just eats the floating heart and it goes to use. When Lum crosses her path afterwards on a night flight, an angry Ran throws the remaining candy at her and storms off. Bemused, Lum eats one. The next morning, Ataru asks her what the deal is with the heart floating over her head, and Lum admits to not knowing. Curious, Ataru grabs it... and then Lum gives him an absolutely smitten look before grabbing him in a powerful embrace whilst also discharging electricity. He demands to know why she did that, letting the heart go as he does, but Lum is just puzzled. Bemused, Ataru grabs her heart gain, and gets another electrified embrace. Charred, he heads to school, where he encourages Mendo to grab the heart, eager to see him get the same treatment. Mendo refuses, naturally suspicious of Ataru, but Kosuke is happy to grab it. To Ataru's shock, Lum promptly writes him a love letter. He snatches the heart from Kosuke and then throws it to Mendo, causing Lum to knit Mendo a sweater. Baffled, Ataru grabs the heart back, and gets a third electric embrace. He throws it back at her, asking what kind of love that is supposed to be, but the other boys figure out what's going on and charge Lum. She zaps them all and grabs the bag of candy, feeding one to Ataru, He promptly grabs the candy off of her and runs away, refusing to let her grab his heart. To evade Lum, he feeds candies to the other boys in class. Just then, Onsen Mark arrives and he grabs all the hearts as "toys". Several days later, Lum notes to Ran that he's stopped coming to school after too many "scary experiences".

She puts him to work as the clerk for the hot spring, warning him not to let any humans bathe in the water, or they will turn into animals. And then along comes Ataru, Lum, Shinobu and Mendo. When they act suspicious, she scoops up a pail of water and threatens to throw it on them; to save Shinobu, the young kitsune makes her trip. The water spills on her arm and turns it into a fox's paw, and she sends the guilty teens to eat a bowl of ramen at the Chinese restaurant by the train station, asserting that it's the only cure.
