356 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.1 Pitch Black"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール まっくろけ, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.1 Makkuro ke")
Chapter 356
Falling asleep in Onsen Mark's class, Lum suddenly wakes screaming from a horrible nightmare of an ominous shadowy figure approaching her as a girl and claiming that it will return to take her as its bride when she comes of age. After school, she tells Ataru about her nightmare, but he's more interested in chasing skirts again. After the usual fight, Lum returns to her UFO, where she gets a vid-call from her father; her great-grandfather's missing cryo-stasis capsule has been discovered after twenty years, and he wants to meet her now he's been woken up. Meanwhile, Ataru ends up at Sakura's shrine, where ominous signs lead to her consulting a crystal ball, receiving a vision of Lum swallowed by darkness. It's night by the time he gets home, where he's told that Lum is visiting her parents, with Ten taunting him that this time, she mightn't come back, given how they fought before she left. Meanwhile, on Oniboshi, Lum's great-grandfather is finally told that Lum is a girl, and he starts to panic...
357 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.2 The Bride Won't Come?"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール 嫁に来ないか, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.2 Yome ni konai ka")
Chapter 357
Ataru wakes in the middle of the night from a nightmare about losing Lum, and tries to assure himself it's just a dream. On Oniboshi, Lum finally meets her great-grandfather, who is very upset - but too senile to explain why. Suddenly, the black phantom from her earlier nightmare arrives, revealing itself as an alien named Uba. He explains that when Lum's great-grandfather was young, he met the oni whilst he was lost and starving, and forced him to play a cruel game, offering him an edible mushroom and a poisoned mushroom. When the oni ate the poisoned mushroom, he demanded the oni's daughter's hand in marriage in exchange for the antidote. However, Lum's great-grandfather only had sons, a fact he revealed after getting the antidote. Uba vowed he would claim the first girl-child to be born to that oni's line, which would ultimately be Lum. And he doesn't care that Lum considers herself betrothed to Ataru. Lum's dad points out he's far too old for Lum, but Uba asserts he has a great-grandson who will marry Lum in his place. The oni finally lose their patience and throw him out of their UFO, but he vows that Lum will be wed to his great-grandson. On Earth, a strange shadow suddenly falls over Tomobiki High as a mysterious alien emerges from it on a chariot drawn by flying pigs. He tries to make a dramatic entrance into Class 2-4, but knocks himself unconscious and is taken to the nurse's office.
358 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.3 The Morning of Separation"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール 別れの朝, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.3 Wakare no asa")
Chapter 358
The alien regains consciousness and immediately latches onto Sakura, mistaking her for Lum. He announces himself as Lum's fiancé, Rupa. At that moment, Lum arrives, and although she shocks him, he gives her a ring and tries to make a dramatic exit, only to bonk his head again. That evening, Ataru is sulking over the reveal of Lum having another fiancé, this one at least somewhat smarter than Rei, and his jealousy causes him to make snide comments. In a spaceship on the dark side of the moon, Rupa confers with Uba, who gloats that the ring Rupa gave Lum will accelerate her horn-shedding cycle, making her defenseless and easy to abduct. The next morning, Ataru is still making snide remarks, and Lum finally loses her patience and zaps him before flying ahead of him. She stumbles onto Rupa, and at that moment, her horns finally drop off, removing her powers until they regrow. Rupa quickly subdues her with soporific spores and spirits her away just before Ataru arrives. Finding Lum's shed horns on the street, he picks them up and then looks up to see Rupa flying away with Lum, taunting Ataru as he goes.
359 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.4 Ignition of the Heart"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール ハートのIgnition, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.4 Haato no Ignition")
Chapter 359
On Oniboshi, Lum's parents receive a mocking videocall from Uba to gloat about how he has kidnapped Lum and will soon marry her to Rupa, although Lum certainly isn't taking her captivity sitting down. Lum's father marshals his soldiers to retrieve Lum, but they are crushed by a sudden rain of crates filled with mushrooms, Uba's "dowry" for Lum. These mushrooms start growing and multiplying massively, swamping the planet in fungus and making it impossible to launch the fleet. On Earth, Ataru suddenly storms into Class 2-4, carrying a large bundle slung on his shoulders and sporting a rare serious expression. He marches over to Mendo and proposes a trade; Ataru's entire collection of info on Tokyo's most beautiful girls in exchange for the right to use Mendo's private spaceship. Mendo retorts that he doesn't have a spaceship. Suddenly, Oyuki and Benten arrive on the latter's hoverbike, and Ataru takes them (and Mendo) to a sweetshop to explain the situation. Oyuki identifies Rupa as the Prince of the World of Darkness, and realizing that this is what Sakura's crystal ball foretold, Ataru instinctively takes off, desperate to find Lum. Oyuki and Benten catch up to him, encourage him to cool down, and then, with Mendo hot on their heels, they head for Ran's ship. The quarter burst in on Ran and Rei, seize the cockpit, and blast off to find a way to the World of Darkness.
360 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.5 Reunion in the Labyrinth"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール 再会のラビリンス, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.5 Saikai no rabirinsu")
Chapter 360
At Oyuki's direction, the group pilot Ran's ship into the dark side of the mood, triggering a dimensional warp to the World of Darkness. Unfortunately, they collide with another ship, crash at the spaceport, and are captured, something Rupa is quick to gloat about to Lum, who was initially emboldened to try a breakout when the ship's approach first reached her. Unfortunately for Rupa, Ataru was hurled to safety by the impact and avoided capture. He scrambles ashore at a lake to find himself being held at gunpoint by a Darkworlder woman, who demands he sign a fake marriage license. She's intent on foiling Rupa's marriage, and she needs a fake husband as part of her plan. Meanwhile, Lum has been forced into a wedding dress, but is still intent on fighting, despite having no powers. Uba uses a copyshroom to create a docile clone of Lum, who can be switched out for the ceremony. Meanwhile, Ataru and his new "ally" arrive, though Ataru is alarmed when she vows to kill everyone involved in the marriage, especially the bride.
361 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.6 Are You Really Getting Married?"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール 結婚するって本当ですか, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.6 Kekkon surutte hontou desu ka")
Chapter 361
Ten seeks out the dungeon and tells Oyuki, Benten, Ran, Rei and Mendo about her having been depowered, which is all the info they need to break out. Meanwhile, Ataru waltzes in through the front door, thanks to the Darkworlder woman's fake marriage license. However, she gets recognized as "Karula", causing her to begin fighting her way in. They arrive just in time, as Lum and Rupa are halfway up the aisle. Lum tries to run to Ataru, but Karula takes aim at her; Ataru causes her to miss her shot, but in the confusion, Rupa slips Lum into a concealed room and Uba slips out the copyshroom clone of Lum. Ataru tells "Lum" that they're going to go home, but the clone repeatedly rejects him, physically and verbally, making Ataru increasingly angry. Karula interrupts, protesting that Rupa said he loved her, but the incredulous Rupa points out that he said that when they were kids and she was literally holding a gun to his head, bluntly telling her that he doesn't like her. Karula goes mad with jealous grief and begins blasting randomly. In the chaos, Lum's hidden room is blown open and the clone falls inside; she escapes upwards and happily tries to run to Ataru, but believing that it was the real Lum who said they were through, he verbally rejects her. Ironically, Ataru and Rupa end up running for shelter together as the mad Karula fires indiscriminately at them both.
362 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.7 The Wrenched Heart"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール ねじれたハートで, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.7 Nejireta haato de")
Chapter 362
The would-be rescue party of Oyuki, Benten, Ran, Rei, Mendo and Ten are finally drawing upon the marriage hall, their collective weight pushing Benten's hoverbike to its limit, when they see the explosions devastating the tower-like structure. Ataru and Rupa are forced onto the roof, where Karula holds them at gunpoint. Lum knocks her gun away, giving Rupa a chance to run for shelter behind Lum, when Uba arrives in a blimp. Ruba grabs the rope ladder and lets it begin carrying him and Lum away, whilst Lum begs for Ataru to come and save her. But Ataru, unable to forget what her copyshroom clone said to him in the marriage hall, refuses to follow. Karula then begins opening fire on Rupa and Lum, and Ataru distracts them in the only way he would think; proclaiming he's going to marry Karula instead. This confuses everybody long enough for Mendo to finally get close enough with Benten's hoverbike to cut the rope ladder, dropping Rupa and Lum to the roof. But they fall and knock over Ataru and Karula, with all four sliding towards the edge. Okyuki tries to help with a volley of icicle spears, but only manages to pin Rupa, who saves Karula (and then denies doing so on purpose), and Ataru, leaving Lum to go flying off into space. Unthinkingly, Ataru leaps from the roof to catch Lum, but once he does, she slaps him and denounces him for leaving her to Rupa and then proclaiming he was going to marry Karula instead. Ataru reacts by angrily flaunting the phony license he signed for Karula and declaring them through. Whether through timing or sheer rage, Lum's horns suddenly grow back and she zaps Ataru like never before, then glides them safely bac to the ground. There, Rupa is sarcastically congratulating Karula on finding a guy willing to marry her, resulting in a four-person argument with Lum and Ataru both "accepting" their Darkworlder "spouse" out of spite for each other.
363 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.8 Worries"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール こまっちゃうな, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.8 Komacchau na")
Chapter 363
Oyuki and Benten try to calm Lum down, explaining how Rupa tricked Ataru with the copyshroom, but Lum is adamant that she will stay in the World of Darkness and marry Rupa, since Ataru clearly distrusts her so much and isn't even willing to apologize. Accepting defeat, Lum's friends return to Ran's now repaired spaceship, interrupting Mendo and Ataru's argument as they spell it out that Lum won't come home without an argument from Ataru. Ataru points out that he's been hurt too... then undermines himself by trying to hit on Oyuki and Benten. Oyuki freezes him solid, and Karula joins them on the ship, which then takes off for Earth. Lum watches them go, weeping. On Earth, Shinobu, Inaba, Sakura and Cherry get together to examine Sakura's crystal ball, which is showing new and even more ominous visions of the future. Soon afterwards, Ran's ship lands and Benten smashes Ataru free. Having been in stasis, Ataru asserts that he won't apologize and demands they go home, being quite shocked when they coolly inform him that they're already back on Earth. The would-be rescue party heads to Ataru's house for dinner, along with Karula, who tries to help out by offering some mushrooms from her home to pad out the meal. They are joined by Shinobu, Inaba, Sakura and Cherry, and the dinner conversation soon turns to what happened and Lum's continued absence. Ataru stubbornly refuses to apologize, demanding that Lum apologize to him, something the other girls assert is unthinkable. In the World of Darkness, Rupa explains that he and Karula were friends when they were little kids, but after his great-grandfather informed him that he was to marry Lum, she went mad and began her mad crusade to try and force his affections. He declares she's far better than such a violent shrew. Lum blasts down a mushroom and coolly points out that she's violent too, before asking how he can love someone he knows nothing about. Resignedly, Rupa says it's too late now. Back on Earth, the dinner party realizes that the mushrooms in their meal never seem to end, which is when Karula tells them that they grow and multiply ceaselessly when exposed to heat and light. The house is promptly overgrown, and a terrifying question asked: what happens when the sun rises?
364 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.9 Nothing Can Stop It"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール どうにもとまらない, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.9 Dou ni mo tomaranai")
Chapter 364
Dawn has risen, and Tomobiki is being overrun by enormous mushrooms. Karula informs the others that only Rupa and his flying pig herds are capable of eradicating them, but she doesn't want to call him. Back in the World of Darkness, Lum is finally seeing Rupa's room for the first time, which is decked out in "Karula merch". An embarrassed Rupa explains that she has been sending him these things for years in an effort to win his heart. Lum notes that Karula is lucky; Ataru would never do something so openly affectionate for her, which makes Rupa quite defensive. They are interrupted by a call from Karula, but her defensive request for aid to remove the mushrooms soon devolves into an argument. Lum and Ataru are soon literally pulled into the argument, and prove no more mature. Lum declares that she will only make Rupa send his pigs if Ataru says he loves her. Though the others encourage Ataru to just say it, even if he doesn't mean it, Ataru instead shouts that he can't stand Lum, and is promptly bludgeoned unconscious. The communication cuts off, and both Lum and Rupa are left seething over their stupid love interests. Lum begins to tear up, admitting that Ataru's never once said "I love you" and wondering if he really does hate her. Back on Earth, Ataru looks over Lum's old horns and squeezes them for comfort, mentally chiding Lum for being so stupid. Meanwhile, Ran calculates that if nothing is done, the mushrooms will cover the earth in ten days. Suddenly, a swarm of flying pigs appears and devours some of the larger mushrooms. A huge hologrammatic projection of Lum and Rupa issues a challenge to Ataru; if he can defeat Lum in a ten-day game of tag by grabbing her horns, then Rupa will destroy the mushrooms. But Lum will be playing this game seriously, refusing to lose until and unless Ataru says "I love you" to her...
365 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.10 "I Want You" Is Asking Too Much"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール ないものねだりのI Want You, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.10 Nai mono nedari no I Want You")
Chapter 365
As the arena for their match is drawn, Rupa lays out the terms; if Ataru wins, he will have his pigs eat the mushrooms blooming across the planet. To win, Ataru must grab Lum's horns. Lum will only fly as high as the mushroom caps, to make things fair. The match begins, but Ataru scoffs at Lum's ultimatum, confident he can beat her without saying those three words. Instead of chasing Lum, he veers off and starts flirting with girls on the sidelines. But Lum just keeps on flying, and the startled Ataru realizes that this won't work. He chases her with a microphone, trying first to sweet-talk her, then turning to insults, getting zapped for his troubles. Watching from the sidelines, Rupa reflects that this game was unnecessary; his pigs have already been ordered to start devouring the mushrooms on both Earth and Oniboshi, but the facade is important to Lum - she wants to hear Ataru say "I love you" at least once. And if he refuses, then she will accept that he truly doesn't love her and break it off with him. Day 2 arrives, and Ataru continues trying to bait Lum into grabbing range with insults. On Oniboshi, as pigs gorge themselves, Uba informs Lum's father that Lum's engagement to Rupa has been annulled, as well as telling him about Lum's gamble with Ataru. Day 5 arrives, and as the mushrooms grow denser, Ataru still refuses to say those words, trying to shame her into giving up. Karula watches, confused by Ataru's refusal to say the words, when Rupa arrives. In a less than romantic manner, he confesses to have actually always been in love with Karula, and begs her to marry him, a proposal she happily accepts once she realizes what he said. Suddenly, Lum's father arrives in his spaceship to reveal a final twist to the game. If Ataru loses, then the oni will wipe humanity's memory of all the aliens...
366 "Boy Meets Girl; Act.11 Fin"
(ボーイ ミーツ ガール Fin, "Boi mitsu garu; Act.11 Fin")
Chapter 366
That night, Ataru's associates muse on Lum's orders to have Earth's memories erased if Ataru loses. They intend to keep this from Ataru, but he eavesdrops on their conversation. The revelation just makes him angrier, and he and Lum get into a bitter argument that ends with them both storming off. Benten and Oyuki follow Lum onto her father's ship to try and talk her out of her memory erasure plan; ironically, Benten gets so worked up that she accidentally launches the eraser. Ataru, not knowing this, retires to bed, clutching Lum's old horns and vowing to never forget. The next day, as Ataru resumes the game of tag, Mendo and the others go searching for the eraser to try and turn it off, but its defenses are too formidable. On the night before the final day, Ten sneaks into Ataru's bedroom to inform the sleeping teen that the timer will go off at the next sunset. Although he asserts he won't miss Ataru, a single tear falls from his eye onto Ataru's face before he flies off, leaving Ataru to open his eyes in grim realization. As the final day's match begins, Ataru mentally complains that he can't say those three words to Lum now, or she'll never know if he really meant them. Lum, meanwhile, mentally laments that she doesn't care if he means them at this point, she just wants to hear the words. Ataru chases her back and forth, growing more and more exhausted, until Lum demands to know if he wants his memory erased. Ataru shouts back that he'd never forget her, then trips, dropping one of Lum's old horns in the process. As he snatches it back up, Lum realizes that even if Ataru can't say those words, he does care for her. She flies back down and embraces him, guiding his hands to her horns, and deactivating the eraser. Rupa and Karula wipe out the mushrooms in Tomobiki, having already cleaned the rest of the world, and then fly back to the World of Darkness. Their friends note that Ataru never did say "I love you" to Lum; a smiling Lum proclaims she'll make him say it if it takes her whole life, with Ataru rebutting he'll say it on his deathbed. Somebody asks if they intend to fight for the rest of their lives, and Lum says simply "Yep!"
