18 | "Father, You Were Strong" (父よあなたは強かった, "Chichiyo Anata wa Tsuyokatta")
One evening, an argument breaks out in the Moroboshi household as Ataru's parents argue over who is to blame for their son's disreputable character. Ataru tries to calm them down, but only makes things worse. In the privacy of her spaceship, Kurama watches from a hidden camera and orders the feed cut in disgust. She declares she will try a new plan to improve Ataru's behavior; having him study under the man she admires the most. That man? Her father, Ushiwaka, in the Kurama Mountain Range in the year 1173. Her plan goes disastrously wrong; Lum following them back through time and attempting to prevent Kurama from having ever been born is ultimately a blip compared to Ataru's attempts to teach Ushiwaka to be as lecherous and flirtatious as himself. In the end, they return to their own time, having achieved nothing.
19 | "Disco Inferno" (ディスコ・インフェルノ, "Disuko Inferuno")
A quiet evening at the Moroboshi household is interrupted when Sakura arrives and invites Ataru and Lum to come out with her to a disco. Surprised but excited, the two accept. On the way, they meet up with a strange man; Tsubame Ozuno, Sakura's long-absent fiance. Ataru gets suspicious, especially when Cherry turns out to be waiting at the disco, but Lum just wants to dance with him. As it transpires, Cherry has demanded that Tsubame prove worthy of Sakura's hand by displaying his skills at wielding magic; Sakura brought Ataru and Lum along hoping to stack the deck with Ataru's uncanny ability to attract spirits. Chaos promptly ensues, for even with Ataru as a lodestone, Tsubame isn't the most competent wizard. Still, his power is sufficient enough that Cherry finally gives the engagement his blessings.
20 | "Just the Two of Us" (さよならを言う気もない, "Sayonara o Iu Kimonai")
On their way home from school, despite Shinobu's warnings, Ataru decides to try a homemade candy Lum gave him that morning. To his horror, it is wickedly spicy, and desperate for relief, he steals and devours some sweet bean buns that Cherry was holding. Cherry protests that the buns were part of a ritual to attempt to seal away the world's evil. Alien candy and magic-soaked cakes triggers a strange reaction, splitting Ataru into two versions of himself; a super-serious, stoic and disciplined Ataru, and a laidback party animal. Naturally, Shinobu prefers the former Ataru, who has eyes only for her, whilst Lum prefers the latter, who is likewise infatuated with her. Ataru's parents, however, decide to force Cherry to re-merge the two Atarus. But due to the meddling of Lum and Shinobu, this process goes wrong, and they instead end up with two Atarus with the personality of the original. It's suggested that one goes back to Oniboshi with Lum and the other stay, and the two start fighting over who must leave.
21 | "Ain't He Sweet" (勇気があれば , "Yūkigāreba")
On a late December day, Ataru makes plans to go on a ski trip with some friends; his parents are initially reluctant, but change their minds when they realize that this means they'll get to spend New Year's without him. He thinks it's his lucky day when his group gets a beautiful young woman as their ski instructor, but his luck sours when Lum and Cherry show up. Cherry is immediately suspicious of the ski instructor, Oniko Adachi-Gahara, for she shares the name of a legendary man-eating demoness. He warns Ataru to be wary of her, and then leaves. Ataru tries to dismiss this as nonsense, but finds he just can't; he's run into too many spooks and specters. Things only get more suspicious when, courtesy of a story whipped up by a jealous Lum, he and his friends have to take shelter in Oniko's lonely mountain hut. In the end, however, it turns out Oniko is just an ordinary, if slightly eccentric, woman.
22 | "Trouble Drops In" (トラブルは舞い降りた!!, "Toraburu wa Maiorita!!")
An ordinary school day at Tomobiki High takes a twist for the unusual when a new transfer student arrives; Shutaro Mendo, heir to the fabulously wealthy Mendo Conglomerate. His wealth, handsome looks and suave charm soon make him the darling of the girls and the bane of the boys. Things only get worse when Mendo runs for class president, declaring he will enforce the school rules with draconian tyranny... but only for the boys; the girls will be exempt. Enraged, the boys of Class 2-4 have Ataru run against him, and with the votes split on gender lines, the two end up evenly matched. Shutaro challenges Ataru to a duel; shooting apples off of each other's heads with cannons. Thanks to Lum, Ataru wins, although the teacher appoints Shutaro as vice-president.
23 | "Zodiac-Go-Round" (星座はめぐる, "Seiza wa Meguru")
Lum attempts to use a computer to assess her compatibility with Ataru, but it gives her inconclusive results, before instead telling her that she is more compatible with Shutaro Mendo. Dismayed by this result, Lum decides to carry out a more in-depth examination, invading Class 2-4 and putting both Ataru and Shutaro through a series of bizarre trials. Her conclusion? The two have fundamentally identical characters, especially in terms of their flaws, so she decides to stay with Ataru, much to Shutaro's dismay.
24 | "Spring Fever" (春のうららの落第教室, "Haru no Urara no Rakudai Kyōshitsu")
As the cherry blossoms of Spring fill the air, Class 2-4 slowly falls into a deep slumber, with the only holdouts being Shutaro (whose pride won't permit it) and Ataru (who is totally focused on a swimsuit magazine). When Lum arrives, they learn the cause behind this infamous event is a pair of fairies; apparently, Class 2-4 is targeted each year by failed fairy students, who must put the class to sleep with their magic as a remedial lesson. This year's failure, Shunmin, and her master attempt to complete their goal by forcing Lum, Ataru and Shutaro to sleep with a party. But Shunmin botches things by giving the boys a stamina-boosting potion instead of a sleeping drug, whilst her instructor gets drunk.
25 | "On the Horns of Passion" (ツノる思いが地獄をまねく, "Tsunoru Omoi ga Jigoku o Maneku")
Lum arrives at Tomobiki High early one morning, looking for Ataru, but is told that he went off somewhere with Shinobu. She goes in search, but is impeded by crashing into a parachuting Mendo. Elsewhere, Ataru attempts to convince Shinobu to give up her crush on Mendo and return to him, but he fails when Lum and Mendo crash into the scene. Upset, he lashes out at Lum and leaves the confused alien behind. Inspired by a comment that Mendo makes, Lum decides to try and pretend to be a normal girl, using a horn-softening spray and a Tomobiki uniform. Her plan works; Ataru immediately starts drooling over her, fighting with Mendo and Shinobu as he flirts. Lum is initially ecstatic, but that changes to anger as Ataru casually disregards his engagement to Lum to her disguised face. After manipulating Ataru into professing his love and devotion to the apparent new girl, she then dramatically reveals her true identity, to his horror.
26 | "Even Though I Wait for You" (君まてども..., "Kimi Matedomo...")
On an ordinary day at Tomobiki High, Mendo flaunts his appeal with the girls of the school, angering his male classmates. They attempt to get back at him by sending a phony love letter to Ataru, one in which they heap scorn on Mendo. This leads to Ataru and Mendo making a bet on whether or not the girl who sent him the letter, "Otoko Kumino", is real, and the boys decide to help Ataru to further show up Mendo. They pay off a girl to pretend to be Otoko, but she ends up gorging herself into a stomachache on the day of the date. Overhearing the boys talking about the scheme, Lum initially decides that Ataru deserves the resultant humiliation... then admits that she just can't let it happen; she loves him too much. Once again, she disguises herself as a human girl and shows up as Otoko Kumino, with Ataru playing along until she can sweep him out of the cafe. She explains the truth behind the whole affair, and makes ready to leave, but Ataru, finally seeing a different side to Lum, asks her to stay and walk with him, which she eagerly accepts. |
