---|---|---|---|---|---|
81 | "Oh, Children! Set Your Aspirations High!" (幼児たちよ、大志を抱け!!, "Yōji-tachi yo, Taishi o Idake!!") | ||||
It's Children's Day, and Ataru is trying to help a pretty alien kindergarten teacher cope with her students. She takes them on an excursion into the streets of Tomobiki Town, but her attempts to pass off random paraphernalia as exciting tourist attractions elicits the scorn of her student, Kintaro. When Mako and her mother pass by on their way to kindergarten, Ataru suggests they go and visit Mako's class. This leads to Kintaro being called out on his apparent resemblance to his mythical namesake. He tries to teach the human students how to live a proper manly life, but fails because he's too young to know how to do it himself. | |||||
82 | "The Swallow and the Penguin" (ツバメさんとペンギンさん, "Tsubame-san to Pengin-san") | ||||
Ten accosts Lum on her way to class, begging her to play with him, but Lum refuses. Instead, she offers him a packet of alien candy and tells him to go off and play. Whilst sitting under a tree, Ten discovers a mother swallow and her nest; feeling sorry for their bug-base diet, he gives the mother swallow one of his candies, whereupon she freaks out and flies away in the direction of the nearby school. Soon afterwards, Class 2-4 is thrown into chaos when a penguin goes on a rampage through the class, stealing everybody's lunch and then running away. As they chase it, Ten catches up to Lum and tells her what she did, for which she scolds him; the candy she gave him is not suitable for earthly biologies. The "penguin" is the mutated sparrow, now too big to fly up and feed her babies. To try and make amends, Ten carries the nest down to the ground and feeds his candy to the chicks, making them grow big enough that she can successfully feed them. | |||||
83 | "A Century by Age Three" (三つ子の魂、百までも!, "Mitsugo no Tamashī, Hyaku Made mo!") | ||||
On a typical day, Lum begs Ataru to play with her, but he refuses and instead leaves to go girl-chasing, much to Lum's dismay. Laughter draws her to the living room, where she finds Ataru's mom looking at some of Ataru's baby pictures. At the same time, the TV plays a special about keeping pet sparrows, and the importance of rearing them from chickhood. Inspired by this, Lum uses a time machine to travel back in time ten years. Tracking down the infant Ataru, already well-developed in his fascination for girls, she attaches a robot doll to the back of his head; it's programmed to deliver a painful electric shock whenever he touches a girl other than Lum. However, she fails to reckon with Ataru's sheer stubbornness, and the young Ataru continues touching girls until finally the doll overloads and explodes. As the young Ataru is taken home by his mother, a dismayed Lum declares this plan a failure. | |||||
84 | "Her Majesty and the Amorous Rugby Player" (女王陛下と愛のラガーマン!!, "Joōheika to Ai no Ragāman!!") | ||||
An alien ship descends upon Earth, determined to conquer the inhabitants. Unfortunately, these aliens are tiny in size, and their ship, which looks very much like a rugby ball, comes to land at Tomobiki High right as a rugby game is being played. During the chaos, Ataru grabs the ship, mistaking it for the ball, and he is shrunken down and brought aboard. He immediately attempts to start hitting on the ship's female captain, to her revulsion. To make things worse, the rest of the players also mistake the ship for their ball and start kicking and throwing it around. When a worried Lum forces her way aboard and starts throwing lightning at her cheating husband, that's the last straw; the aliens kick Lum and Ataru out before beating a hasty retreat. | |||||
85 | "Revenge of the Protozoa" (原生動物の逆襲, "Gensei Dōbutsu no Gyakushū") | ||||
It's finally warm enough to reopen the pool at Tomobiki High, but first it needs to be cleaned after its prolonged disuse. Class 2-4 is set to work, only for Ten to show up and start making a nuisance of himself. The boys try to ignore him, but eventually he provokes them to the point they turn on him. Ten retaliates with his fiery breath, causing Lum to panic and turn on the water, flooding the pool to extinguish the flames. She fishes Ten out and scolds him, but they soon have bigger issues; Ten dropped some of his alien candy, which causes the protozoas in the still-filthy pool to suddenly grow into giants. The oversized protozoas chase the boys from the pool, and Ten translates that they are defending their home. Annoyed, Ataru snatches Ten and forces him to breathe fire, shrivelling the protozoas into lifeless dust. When this makes Ten start crying, Lum revives the protozoas with some hot water, and they promptly barricade the pool against all comers. | |||||
86 | "Home Is Where You Find It" (住めば都, " Sumeba Miyako") | ||||
Trying to show off, Mendo invites Lum, Shinobu and Sakura to one of the hotels his family owns, which means Ataru and Cherry tag along for the ride. Inevitably, Mendo and Ataru try to get closer to Sakura than the miko feels is appropriate, and she hits them both, causing Ataru to sink to the bottom of the pool, where he discovers a docile little water monster is living. Unfortunately, the presence of guests causes the monster to reveal itself to the other swimmers, who don't take its presence so kindly, and Mendo orders it to leave. When Ataru arrives home at the day's end, however, he discovers the monster has moved into his bathroom. | |||||
87 | "Deranged Marriage, Part 1" (見合いコワし=その1=, "Miai Kowashi -Sono 1-") | ||||
A bored Ten goes looking for something to do, and stumbles across his uncle, Lum's father, ordering her to attend a party he's throwing. He asks the oni about coming along, and is told no. Lum's father initially refuses to say why Ten can't come, but Ten eventually figures out that the party is a courtship party for Lum; Lum's father has grown tired of the disrespect Ataru shows to lum. Ten's uncle tells him to keep it a secret, so Ataru won't interfere, then flies off once Ten promises. Unfortunately for him, Ten's promise is worth nothing, and soon Ataru hears. But he claims to not care and goes home, his black mood only darkening when he sees how carefree and excited Lum is to be going to the party. Once Lum leaves, he tries to convince himself he's happy to be rid of her, reminding himself that Lum forced her way into his life, but he just can't let her go. The next day, he manipulates Ten into taking him into space, determined to ruin Lum's courtship party. | |||||
88 | "Deranged Marriage, Part 2" (見合いコワし=その2=, "Miai Kowashi -Sono 2-") | ||||
Somewhere in the depths of space, Ten's spaceship breaks down due to being overloaded, carrying Ten and a cramped Ataru off to intervene with Lum's courtship party. Fortunately for them, they get picked up by a passing ship. Meanwhile, Lum arrives at her party, and is very confused by the behavior of the guests, with her father wondering if maybe he should have told her this was about arranging a new marriage for her. Things go very poorly, with Lum's father irritably admitting he's invited a bunch of weirdoes. Ironically, the one exception he finds, a transforming centaur named Yuni, actually has no interest in Lum, although her dad forces him to hang out with Lum all the same - angering Yuni's jealous girlfriend. She is approached by Ataru, Lum, and a mysterious figure, all of whom are intent on breaking up the party. | |||||
89 | "Deranged Marriage, Part 3" (見合いコワし=その3=, "Miai Kowashi -Sono 3-") | ||||
Ataru sneaks into Lum's courtship party to make off with some food for himself, Ten, Yuni's girlfriend, and the mysterious masked leader of their group before they enact their plan to break up the party. However, Yuni's girlfriend eats all the food singlehandedly, so Ten is sent to get some more... and he gives away the entire scheme, plunging the party into a panic. Back downstairs, Ataru tries and fails to hit on Yuni's girlfriend, who finally names herself as Diana, before the trio decide to carry out their mission. Of course, with Lum's father having been informed, the party is now crawling with guards, and it quickly becomes an armed stand-off. Suddenly, the Prince of the Netherworld burrows up from beneath them, causing them to all plummet into the tunnels he's been digging all through the party. | |||||
90 | "Deranged Marriage, Part 4" (見合いコワし=その4=, "Miai Kowashi -Sono 4-") | ||||
Temporarily lost in the tunnels of the Prince of the Netherworld, Yuni and Diana clear up the misconceptions about Yuni's relationship with Lum. As the Prince attempts to lead them to safety, Lum complains about her father tricking her into showing up to this party, revealing to a shocked Ataru that she wasn't in on the scheme to break off her engagement to him. The anti-matchmaker who recruited Ataru, Ten and Diana then reveals herself to be the Prince's fiancee, Prism, who he had forgotten about when he decided to come to the party. Ataru immediately tries to glomp Prism, pausing only to save Lum when the Prince attempts to run away with her, the first of several signs that help Lum realize who he is. The Prince's lack of direction sense causes him to lead them right into the arms of Lum's father's forces, but Lum puts her foot down and refuses to marry Yuni, who is clearly in love with Diana. Lum's father agrees to call off the whole scheme, and Lum and Ten return to Earth, giving Ataru a lift and playing along with his attempt to pretend he wasn't involved at all. | |||||
91 | "Marine Garbage Disposal" (生ゴミ、海へ, "Namagomi, Umi e") | ||||
One fine summer day, Ataru, Lum and Ten decide to go on a trip to the beach. Before they leave, Ataru's mom asks him to throw out the water monster from Mendo's pool, who's been living in their bathroom for the last month. At the beach, they stumble across Shinobu and Shutaro, and then the whole group stumbles upon Sakura and her fiancé Tsubame, who they try to spy on in their intimate moment. After a rather emotionally distressing lunch, they finally discard the monster in a box, only for him to be adopted by a little boy. | |||||
92 | "O, Rain! Rain and Rain More! Part 1" (雨よ降れ降れ、もっと降れ!=その1=, "Ame yo Fure Fure, Motto Fure! -Sono 1-") | ||||
A beautiful girl named Tsuyuko Amamori moves into the house across the street from Ataru's, but torrential rain mysteriously follows her wherever she goes. Ataru immediately goes to hit on her, and though she warns him that rain will dog them always, she finally gives in and agrees. Another odd thing about her is that she reacts with more disgust to Cherry than is usual. That afternoon, Cherry goes to see Lum, and instructs her to make sure that Ataru carries some teruteru-bozu dolls with him on the date. Lum hides them in Ataru's umbrella, causing Tsuyoko to freak out when she sees them, but Ataru removes them and they go on their date, with Lum and Cherry spying. Ataru is constantly getting wet, but he just shrugs it off and invites her on another date. Cherry concludes that Tsuyoko must be an ameonna, a form of rain spirit. | |||||
93 | "O, Rain! Rain and Rain More! Part 2" (雨よ降れ降れ、もっと降れ!=その2=, "Ame yo Fure Fure, Motto Fure! -Sono 2-") | ||||
Ataru gets invited to dinner at his new neighbors, the Amamori family, but Cherry and Lum are convinced that the beautiful Amamori daughter Tsuyoko is an ameonna. They sneak into the Amamori's kitchen and confront them about their beliefs. At that moment, Tsuyoko's father arrives and reveals the truth: when he was a little boy, he made friends with an amefurashi, promising to play with the rain-summoning spirit if she would use her powers to ruin his school sports day. However, his parents moved and he was taken away before he had the chance to fulfil his promise, for which the vengeful yokai cursed him. The rain that bedevils Tsuyoko is her revenge, and can only be lifted if she makes a true friend - something he begs Ataru to become. | |||||
94 | "O, Rain! Rain and Rain More! Part 3" (雨よ降れ降れ、もっと降れ!=その3=, "Ame yo Fure Fure, Motto Fure! -Sono 3-") | ||||
Sleeping after his dinner with the Amamori family, Ataru has an ominous dream in which the vengeful amefurashi vows she will curse him to death if he tries to break the curse on Tsuyuko Amamori. But Ataru is undaunted, and walks her to school the next morning, to the amefurashi's dismay. She attempts to spook Ataru, but is scared off by Cherry. In class, Ataru becomes the target of his own personal rainstorm, but he vows he will continue; he's too invested in getting intimate with Tsuyoko at this point to consider giving up. A week later, the constant soakings and drenchings are taking their toll on even Ataru's formidable stamina, but he still refuses to give up. Cherry suggests that they find the amefurashi responsible and make her break the curse, and luckily they discover she's been camping in the same vacant lot as Cherry for the last week. They confront her there, but before they can even start, Mr. Amamori intervenes, pleading with her to spare his daughter and Ataru. The amefurashi agrees, if he'll fulfill his long-ago promise. After a week of playing, the rain spirit is satisfied and departs, lifting her curse as she does so. Unfortunately for Ataru, his usual luck kicks in; he catches a cold, and before he can fully recover, the Amamoris move out. | |||||
95 | "Panic at the Haunted Inn" (パニックin幽霊民宿, "Panikku in Yūrei Minshuku") | ||||
Ataru, Lum, Shinobu and Shutaro go on vacation to a remote holiday inn called Sudamatei. It's remote, it's run-down, it's creepy, and it's run by a kooky old married couple, but there's a beautiful young serving girl called Otama, so naturally the boys are all for staying. On their first night, they discover that for all Otama is a ghost, she's a timid being, and the couple spend their nights terrifying her. They attempt to help Otama to scare the old couple back, but it turns out to be for naught, as the old kooks are just too creepy. | |||||
96 | "The Selfish Ghost" (わがまま幽霊, "Wagamama Yūrei") | ||||
The morning after their first disastrous night at Sudamatei, Ataru, Lum, Shinobu and Shutaro all check out, glad to be rid of the creepy old couple who runs the inn. As they are walking down the beach, Ataru mentions wishing he could have seen the ghost Otama one last time, and to their great surprise she appears right there and then. She begs them to let her come with them to the beach, and they deduce it must be some beach-related unfulfilled desire that is keeping her soul bound to the mortal realm. They show her as good a time as they can, buying her drinks, shaved ice and souvenirs, but they can't seem to help her cross over. With night falling and Ataru down to just enough money to cover the train fare home, they leave, and Otama returns to Sudamatei. There, the old couple scold her for tricking yet another bunch of innocent young visitors into pampering her for the day, with Otama confessing she just can't let go of such earthly pleasures. | |||||
97 | "Beach Mystery" (海辺の怪, "Umibe no Kai") | ||||
Ataru, Lum and Shinobu are on a beach one fine day, when Shinobu gets the idea to play suika-wari, the Japanese watermelon-smacking game. When they go in search of a melon, however, they are greeted with horror by the melon seller, who refuses to sell them anything. They continue looking, but everyone tells them the same story: melons may not be sold, split or eaten today. At the mayor's house, Sakura and Cherry have been hired to lead a ceremony to appease a local watermelon kami; it is fear of his wrath that has made all melon-related activities taboo on this specific day. Unaware of this, the three teens continue their search, and stumble across the shrine where the watermelon kami's avatar is kept. Oblivious to its spiritual nature, they mock and insult it until the angry kami gives chase. It finally corners them on the beach, the whole town having raced out to try and stop them, before Lum blasts it with lightning. Its rage fully peaked, the watermelon kami declares its intent to visit its wrath upon all the villagers... and its legendary wrath turns out to be spitting seeds in peoples' faces. The townspeople promptly start spitting seeds back at it, calling it out on terrorizing them for generations with the threat of such a lame punishment, whilst the three teens (plus Sakura and Cherry) beat a hasty and dumbfounded retreat. | |||||
98 | "Typhoon Fun" (台風は楽し, "Taifū wa Tanoshi") | ||||
A typhoon is making landfall in Tomobiki, and both Lum and Ten are excited to experience one for the first time. Ataru rounds them up to help get the windows boarded up before the storm properly hits, and then they all take shelter inside. Unfortunately, old roofs and torrential rains are a poor mix, and the house is leaking like a sieve. Trying to be helpful, Lum uses a gravity manipulator to suspend all the water... but, by morning, there's a veritable lake hanging upside down from the interior roof. The Moroboshis and their oni guests try to escape, only to find the street is flooding too. A week later, the group is trapped halfway up the stairs, pinned between water coming from below and above. Desperately, they attempt to escape, breaking through the roof to find that the typhoon is well past, and if they'd just opened the doors, they could have drained the house. | |||||
99 | "Secret Mission: Date Stakeout" (秘密指令“デートをのぞけ!", "Himitsu Shirei "Dēto o Nozoke!"") | ||||
Sakura goes to meet her fiancé Tsubame for a date, and of course all the kids from Class 2-4 tag along to follow her; this is their first meeting with Tsubame for everybody except Ataru, Lum, Shinobu and Shutaro. Eventually, they follow the engaged couple to a graveyard, where Tsubame wants Sakura to meet his dead father. Using his powers, he summons up his father's ghost, but he overdoes the spell and calls forth a gaggle of unwanted ghosts in the process. They all go off to spy on young couples who might be nearby, and Sakura nearly shares a tender kiss with Tsubame... before her ghostly father-in-law spoils the mood. | |||||
100 | "It's No Fun Being Sick!" (風邪イヤですね!, "Kaze Iya Desu ne!") | ||||
When Lum catches an oni cold from her father, the pervier boys in Tomobiki High bribe Ataru to steal her face mask so they can use it as a way to indirectly kiss her. They soon regret this when they discover that the germs in her mask cause them to break out in pink-and-green stripes wherever the mask touched skin! They hunt Ten down and send him to retrieve some oni cold medicine from Lum's UFO, but he still has problems with reading, so whatever it is that he ends up bringing them only makes it worse. | |||||
101 | "A Different Dracula" (翔んだドラキュラ, "Tonda Dorakyura") | ||||
High on a chimney in Tomobiki Town, bungling vampire Count Dracula wakes to seek the blood of beautiful girls. His faithful servant bat leads him to his latest victim, who turns out to be none other than Lum. Unfortunately, the incompetent vampire arrives at the Moroboshi household after potsticker night, when Ataru is taunting his oni wife over her newly revealed aversion to garlic. Retreating to the rooftop, he has his bat convey a letter begging Lum to come up there so he can drink her blood, and whilst it is incredibly poorly spelled, it piques her and Ataru's curiosity, so they come up to see him. However, he botches his attempt to bite Lum's neck and leaves, deeply embarrassed, whilst the two are left wondering what his deal was. | |||||
102 | "Blood Drive of Love" (愛の献血運動, "Ai no Kenketsu Undō") | ||||
Desperate for the blood of a beautiful girl, Dracula sends his bat minion to go in search for some. The bat flies straight to Ataru and Lum and begs them for some of Lum's blood. Lum refuses, but Ataru agrees to provide some blood if the bat will introduce him to a cute girl. The bat transforms himself into a cute girl, and "she" sets off with Ataru and Lum. They visit a plethora of pretty girls that Ataru knows, but all of them refuse to donate blood for a vampire, especially one as lame as this Count Dracula. In the end, Ataru ends up giving "her" a bag full of assorted cats' blood and takes a kiss as his payment, leaving Lum laughing herself sick at Ataru's disgust when he discovers the "cute girl" is actually a male bat. Not that the bat feels much happier as he delivers the blood to his master. |
